Barenaked Ladies – Angry People Lyrics 17 years ago
I love the POV shift in this song. As I interpret it, the first chorus uses a non-inclusive "we" in the "We just drag them down," meaning that the singer's group of angry people drag others down, leaving the listener out of it.
Later, it's 'We just drag YOU down," pitting the listener with the happy people.
Finally, the verse complains about the happy people, and uses the inclusive "we," meaning "you and I just drag them down." He then immediately points out that he dragged the listener down to his side.

or not.

i'm just a forgetful dork. for some reason, 9.8 didn't click in my head as the acceleration due to gravity. I thought it meant the time it would take to fall from his height. I used that to calculate the distance (using 9.8 as the acceleration also and not even realizing they were the same number). about 1500 ft is what i got.

Barenaked Ladies – Celebrity Lyrics 19 years ago
i don't think he's really complaining about being a celebrity because, despite the money and a large following, i wouldn't exactly call Stephen Paige and A-lister. I think it's more of a cynical take from the outside.

Barenaked Ladies – A Lyrics 19 years ago
will you two give it up? i'm a huge fan of both bands. the beatles definately get props for being first. that doesn't make them better, but they were the first to do a LOT of stuff that everyband today does and doesn't even think about. saying that the barenaked ladies will pass the beatles any time soon is just adsurd. in what way? popularity/status-wise, there's no chance. the BNLmania just doesn't exist, like it or not. musicly or lyricly? you can't compare bands thrity years apart like that. modern physicists have used Einstein's laws of relativity to come up with some pretty cool stuff about black holes and such that Einstein never thought of. does that mean that they're smarter than him? the beatles had to break ground and make it possible for today's bands to do what they do. people (myself for example) could enjoy listening to BNL moreso than the Beatles, but that doesn't mean they're better or worse.
snm, you're points are just ridiculous. two of them are about the name of the bands. who gives a crap? and believe it or not, the Ladies have released over 100 songs on CDs, so it's not a lopsided battle as you think of library size.
BNL didn't influence the Beatles because Mr. Creeggan taught Ringo; BOTH bands were influenced by Mr. Creegan.
you're both putting out a lot of dribble over nothing. both groups are amazingly innovative and have incredibly good songwriters. but it's unrealistic to say that BNL will ever "surpass" the Beatles.

Not technically banned, but in the days following September 11th Clearchannel "suggested" that certain songs not be played that might take on a new meaning in light of the attacks that would disturb the public. IE: i don't think someone who had a loved one killed in the attacks would want to turn on the radio and hear "hit me with your best shot."

And the second verse, according to the official AC/DC website, is "HE'S double-dealing," not SHE'S. so in that verse he's speaking to a GIRL who's guy is cheating on her, and he's offering (hetero) sex to her.

AC/DC – Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap Lyrics 19 years ago
i could see how you'd interpret it as butt sex, but i think in the context of
"If you got a lady and you want her gone
But you ain't got the guts"
i think "back door" has the same meaning as "under table" or "third party," meaning he'll kill her without being associated with you.

The Beatles – A Day in the Life Lyrics 19 years ago
Oh, and Paul is wearing BLUE on the album cover. If you're refering to Abbey Road, a lot of the so called "evidence" there is coincidence. the beatles and the photographer all state that them even being in step wasn't planned, let alone paul being out of step. I read an account of the producer or sound engineer or someone (I really can't remember who) who usually parked where the bug is parked in the shot. that day someone else happened to park there. he was jokingly upset in the interview because that bug sold for a crap load of money and it could have been his car there.
not a lot was set up for that shot. pretty much the street was closed off and the beatles went outside and they took some pictures.

The Beatles – A Day in the Life Lyrics 19 years ago
like hearing "house of Paul," a lot of the "evidence" is only there if you look for it. The whole concept of the Sgt. Pepper album was that it was a completely different band, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," that is playing a concert. The Beatles were just playing these parts. Billy Shears is the fiction lead singer of SPLHCB, and it is Ringo who sings his song "With A Little Help From My Friends." The album cover was supposed to be a shot of Sgt. Peppers band after they performed at a park, with the crowd of of people behind them watching. Even the "real" Beatles came to see them (the wax dummies on the right). This is all in the liner notes for the album, at least the CD.

i love this song. i girl like two guys, and the one (the singer) loved her so much and knew she'd be happier with the other guy, and let her go. told her he needed space when he really wanted nothing more than to be with her. and he thought that she'd see this and choose him anyways... but she didn't. and now he's stuck with that decision.

Eagles – Hotel California Lyrics 20 years ago
i'm not going to go into the whole "lyrics can be interpreted however" talk but how could you ASSURE us that it's about anything? People can find lots of things that fit, but that doesn't mean you're right and they aren't. get over yourself and wake up to some other people's opinions.
i hate people that say "this song is about drugs/Hell/Satan so i won't listen to it. i have a kick ass 14 year old drummer in my band and his conservative parents won't let us play this song or they pull him out. even if it about about any on things, it sure doesn't glorify them. no matter how you interpret it, the singer likes it at first, then wants out and can't get out. if it is about drugs or Hell, it discourages them, just like House of the Rising Sun.

Oasis – Don't Look Back in Anger Lyrics 20 years ago
i've always interpreted the song as a combination of some of the above comments. the singer is in a rock band and his relationship with his girlfriend comes to the point where it's either the band or her. "Please don't put your life in the hands of a rock and roll band who'll throw it all away." is his girlfriend asking him. he decides to go with the band and not look back and wonder what could have been. For some reason I've always pictured the line "She knows it's too late as were's walkin on by" as the band walking past the girl backstage and going onto the stage.

The Beatles – I Want to Hold Your Hand Lyrics 20 years ago
The Beatles changed in their career because music changed. This was incredibly new stuff for the time, not just some shitty oldie. And jeez, how many different ways can people find to say every Beatles song is about drugs? It was definately intended to be "I can't hide." The original lyric scribbles are (were) on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame if you don't believe me.

The Beatles – With a Little Help from My Friends Lyrics 20 years ago
God, everyone thinks every Beatles song is about drugs. People even say they're saying "I get high" instead of "I can't hide" in She Loves You. This song is about just what the title says it is: A currently loveless guy falling back on his friends for help.

The Beatles – Come Together Lyrics 20 years ago
cadaver, the bag production = baggin weed is pretty farfetched, considering "Bag Productions" was Yoko's thing. and dodelson, where did you hear that? I've read firsthand accounts by the Beatles managers and recording engineers saying the definately did. In fact once John was so drugged up during a session that he started to get sick. the manager of EMI (i think) didn't know he was on drugs and wanted to get him some air. outside the studio was flooded with groupies as usualy so he brought John up to the roof and left him alone. When the rest of the Beatles found out where he was that freaked out because they knew he was on drugs and might jump from the roof. Luckily nothing happened.

Again, perhaps the American version is different, but the lines are definately

Gonna check her out

It seems that half of the people love Jet because they sound like old bands (a welcome change from today's pop) and the other half hate them because they sound exactly like old bands.
