| I think BrandtH missed the mark here - this song was written a decade before Bono discovered irony. I think it was a clarion call for the religious leaders in Ireland to take to heart the words of their own scriptures. I sincerely doubt there is a subversive undertone about religious conflicts here - this was U2 at their most spiritual. | |

Keeping in mind that it's Bono, this song sounds like Daddy is a metaphor for God looking out for his children. Daddy's gonna pay for your crashed car... Daddy's with you whereever you are... Sounds to me like the concept of God offering redemption to one of his lost. Could be just what it says tho. |

This song is such bullshit. I like the production and Shady's singing is better than he thinks, but come on. Everyone's gushing about how sensitive and mature he is now? He starts singing about his beautiful little girl, but of course he can't make it halfway through ONE FUCKING SONG without it degenerating into angry ranting against his ex-wife and entire family. "I'm so glad her mom didn't" and the censored part is "abort her" for anyone who couldn't figure that out. I think anyone who is a child of divorce will understand the concept of using a kid as leverage - "look at how much I love her. You bitch". If he really cared about his daughter so much he wouldn't turn a love song for her into that bullshit (which makes up the majority of his other songs). Listen to "Drips" - that's our new grown-up Eminem. That's like saying Family Guy is more mature and refined than South Park. By the way - to all the 14 year old idiots going "Fuck Kim yo", you've never met her in your life and she has not had the platform to say one word about her marriage to Eminem. Just because he airs all his dirty laundry in his songs doesn't make it all true. He says so himself. I can't wait until he makes a track about how he dropped his ice cream when he was 3 years old and nobody held his hand. Fucking shut up. |

Nobody's posted on this song for some reason... I think this is one of the only two songs that come away from Pablo Honey scot-free (the other being Stop Whispering). This song is the sound of someone resigning themselves to their slow collapse. "I am fused just in case I blow out" - Thom feels his life is barely held together by routine. It's not as sad as it could be - the music gives the impression that these thoughts are merely passing through his head. I have an acoustic version from CBC Radio Vancouver that has a few of the Posies playing with Thom. It's worth tracking down; the spareness of the instrumentation seems to give his lyrics more heft. |
