I think the whole idea of the song, how she lives at the end of the world, is how she has this other voice inside her telling her to leave things behind and start anew. She's always teetering between the sane boring world she lives in and this one of much more adventure, a bolder, brighter world. |

This song means so much to me. I was dating this girl for a while- very sweet girl, but it always seemed like I was trying to impress her. She went away for a while, and came back and ended things with me. All is good because she's definitely not what I wanted. I absolutely love the line, "I gather speed from you fucking with me". Every time I think of how I bent over backwards for her, just pisses me off and wants to put the past behind me. |

for me, on a personal basis, I feel this song represents letting all of the past demons out of you. If it's a bad relationship that has kept you scarred, or somebody making you feel worthless growing up, this song is trying to move beyond their worlds, into your own. There isn't room for both. At the end of the song, he has reached this peace with himself. I also think the whole idea of don't drink the water is don't let others poison your thoughts. Think and feel for yourself, no matter how twisted that might be. I normally don't like dave's popular songs, but this song is pure and amazing. |

first off- i think the lyrics are pretty far off. great song though. I think it's about coming back to someone too late, when the damage has been done. I think they had something special, but the time apart has caused too much hurt. I love the line, "sing to me hope as she's thrown on the sand."
He's calling hope a real person.
I think the whole idea with "Fair" is more of a sarcastic tone- he was there for her the whole time while she disappeared on him. He was counting on her and she didn't hold up her end. |

i kind of see it differently. I just think this song is so beautiful....the whole idea to me is this fire is starting in their relationship, it's that time where you hit the point where you can advance and get serious, or take a step back. I love the reference to the foreign candle in your eye. how cool. something beautiful is in her eye, but it isn't what he hoped for or recognized.
The second verse goes on about the chilly and foggy theme. I think she is getting cold feet to committ.
"trail of white blood betrays the reckless route your craft is running" is the best lyric of the song in my opinion. White blood is cold and distant....I think he's a dreamer, wants to see where things will go, but she's holding back for some reason. |

I think this journey they're talking about is not an actual trip to the southern Islands as they say, more like a metaphor to how he's been all around, experimenting with love with many different women, but he always comes back to this one girl. I think this whole idea about the Southern Cross is the symbol for the love they share in their relationship; he's been looking for it on his journey and found it in this girl.
I love the line, "She is all that I have left, and music is her name."
not sure how that fits in my interpretation of the song, but it's stiff pretty cool. |

Interesting interpretations friends. I think this is more of a song about a father trying his best to lead the song in the right path in life, but he actually kills his dreams and takes away his youthful exuberance.
While everything is open, everything is shut down, down down- This kid has his whole future in front of him, but really his future is limited from the restrictions and poisonous ideas from his father.
The BEST part of the song I feel is when Dave initially says, the ground is nothing more than one point of view. I believe this point of view is that of his father. At the end the point of view changes to his very own. He is over the past and willing to open up to what the future has in store for him.

I have a different interpretation of this song. I think this song is about letting go of your father figure and moving on in life, moving out in your own. IN the beginning, the father wants a child to influence. The blister part with the wings in the spine is the son/person breaking away from the influence.
How he'd love to find his tounge in your cheek- I think this is the father wants his teachings/guidance to impact his son, even thought the son is trying to find his own perspective.
Then he goes on to say, he'll always love him no matter what he takes away from his father.
I think the brother actually found the courage to break away, and the narrator is admiring that. Even though it might not have gone as smoothly, he is his own man now. "brain fell out of his teeth"- he spoke everything on his mind.
At the end, he's saying to have faith in heading out in life on his own.
My interpretation of the two-headed boy part is this mixed lives we all live, those to please our parents, and those to live how we really want. |
