Bad Religion – Skyscraper Lyrics 14 years ago
The album Recipe for Hate came out in '93, so this is DEFINITELY not the intended meaning. I heard an acoustic version on Pandora while I was driving. For the first few verses, I was thinking it had to do with 9/11 or terrorism. "we'll build a city with a tower for the world" = NYC's World Trade Center

The "You thought that if you got caught we'd all go away" could have been the thought that a successful act of terrorism could disarm the West, or at least remove their influence from the Muslim world. But around this time, I was like "Oh wait, I know this song. Duh!"

The Epoxies – No Interest Lyrics 16 years ago
Advertising at its worst. No longer persuading you, they use technology to force you to desire to buy things, making you dream of microwaves. I had a dream about microwaves once...

"No interest till you die" To get people to take on too much debt, they sometimes lure you in with "No interest until next year." At the extreme end of the scale, "No interest till you die", maybe implying that your next of kin will pay for it? Or m

I think it's about unchecked paranoia, particularly the line "write 'em all down, and then tear up the page".

The Epoxies – Struggle Like No Other Lyrics 16 years ago
This song reminds me of 1984. There are two people who are resisting an omniscient totalitarian government. They need to keep their cover up, and cover up their TVs (so the two-way telescreens can't monitor them!), and they need to watch their TV every day (to prevent suspicion).

The "IBMs" that monitor conversations remind me of the FBI's Carnivore system.

Wow, I never thought of it that way. It DOES seem pretty sexual.

This is a fun lounge cover of Radiohead's "Creep". The cover is on "Lounge Against The Machine".

There's quite a few Radiohead references in this song, though most Radiohead fans probably caught them all. Besides the obvious "You go to my Radiohead" quote, "Pablo Honey" and "OK Computer" are Radiohead albums.

The "Fitter, happier" quote at the end is of course excerpted from Radiohead's song "Fitter, Happier."

Are you kidding? When E! True Hollywood Stories comes out for They Might Be Giants, as The Onion suggested, they'll probably just talk about their horrible Pac-man addiction in the 80's.

Pollen – Life Of Crap Lyrics 22 years ago
First off, this interpretation, and the lyrics themself have been cooperative effort between Raphide and cprompt, lyrical genius masterminds.

Interpreting this song may seem like a stupid and obvious task, because of the straightforward lyrics. Oh well. =)

Verses one through three are the protagonist first, just declaring that his life is crap. He claims that he needs no one, and longs for the girl. Still pretty obvious. He still cares about this girl, and defends that she's not one of them, the bad girls who are abusive and mean and all that not-fun stuff.

The line "You'll find numbers" means that since he needs no one, and people mean nothing to him, that everyone is reduced to a number, lacking all importance. In this verse, he switches his focus to 'the girl'. He is now talking directly to her. He bitterly states that he knows that she doesn't care about him anymore, and is just avoiding him and his problems. He sarcastically says "I bet your conscience must weight a ton"--meaning the opposite, that she's not at all concerned with any moral issues.

Despite all of that, he does still have an emotional attachment to her, after all, he'd 'gladly give it all just to hold hands at the mall'.

Then, he talks about his sense of security and purpose in life is totally eradicated because she was the focus of his life.

"I've got no use for other people, they all suck" is again, another lovely bitter statement. He only wants her, and everything else pales in comparison. Normally if he felt bad, she would be there to reassure him (tell me that one day things will be okay).

And, with the semi-abrupt closing, he says that without her, his entire life has lost meaning, and he no longer has a reason to live. This could easily have been an allusion to a quote by Nietzche: "He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how." Life seemed easy with her, and all obstacles seemed to be conquerable.

Therefore, we can evaluate that the protagonist does in fact have a life of crap. Pity him.

This song is a tribute to Amadou Diallo, who reached for his wallet when stopped by the police (possibly to show identification) and they shot him...41 times. They were acquitted, saying they thought the wallet was a gun. It was considered by many to be a case of racial profiling.

Puddle of Mudd – She Hates Me Lyrics 22 years ago
Meaning of the song is fairly straight-forward: Guy meets girl, things go well, flaws exposed, relationship crumbles. After a two-week relationship, you really don't get the right to make a song and whine about it. The music is all-too-simple, and the lyrics could easily have been written by someone in elementary school. I would definately not classify this as emo, unless emo is defined as "sad songs about relationships", in which case, there's a whole lot of 60's songs that belong in that genre (a really good one, "End of the World" by Skeeter Davis is worth checking into). I rated the song a 2, because it wasn't painful to listen to.

The meaning in this song is fairly obvious. The idea is that depression is only made worse by isolation, and becoming active is a way to relieve its effect.

Rudie Can't Fail – 88 Miles Per Hour (the Ballad Of Marty Mcfly) Lyrics 22 years ago
This song details the events of Back to the Future 1. "1.21 jiggawatts" refers to the power generated by the fission of plutonium, which was required in the movie to power the time-machine equipment on Doc Brown's modified DeLorean.

The term "jiggawatt" is not a real measurement of power. A gigawatt is a billion watts. However, the letters j, x, q, etc. sound more impressive and exotic to the English ear since they are uncommon.

Creed – My Sacrifice Lyrics 22 years ago
This HAS gotten way off topic. ChrisAnF56789, the name of this site is SongMEANINGS. Comments like "It means whatever you want" just degenerate the discussion--let people speculate assume.

As for Boy Scouts...you are discriminating a person based on an inherent sexual preference. The ruling was not based on safety, but rather that they felt that gays were not "morally straight", which is part of the Scout Oath. The problem is not gay people being with children, the problem is with pedophiles being with children. Should female teachers be not allowed to teach male students because they have a sexual preference for men? While statuatory rape does occur amongst teachers and their students, it is still not enough grounds to discriminate.

Wolves instinctually hunt sheep to fulfill their desire to satiate hunger. In the Scouts, they cook weenies over a campfire. Have you ever worked as a counselor at a camp? If you prefer women, isn't there an opportunity for you to prey on the female campers? The issue is common sense and basic security, regardless of if the supervisor is a male who prefers females, a female who prefers males, or a female who prefers females. If parents want to let their kids go on the camping trip, as responsible parents, they should know the people who are going to be supervising.

They Might Be Giants – I Palindrome I Lyrics 22 years ago
This song is filled with palindromes, and a somewhat twisted meaning.
The first one, "I". I is only a single letter, so it is a palindrome. I is still I both forward and backward. The title, "I Palindrome I" is a palindrome if you consider each word, instead of each letter. Mom, dad, and I are palindromes.
While not exactly a palindrome, the irony of your mother calling a son of a bitch, well...if you're HER son...anyway, the idea is that they are both waiting for the other to die so they can collect insurance, inheritance, etc.
Next, is man-o-nam. Man of VIETnam? *shrug* It's still a palindrome.
The bulletproof dress hanging from the clothesline is hanging there because it was not worn! As a result, someone is in the hospital, presumably the narrator's mother. The medical charts random zig-zag gets some personification, IT is deciding whether the mother will live. The son can "help it decide" by either killing her outright or by disconnecting her life support.

The "Son I am able" verse is a palindrome word by word. It could mean that the mother says she doesn't need any support from her son (Son I am able) but she fears he will kill her (though you scare me). The son basically says "Watch! I'll scare you yet!"

The next palindrome is "Egad a base tone denotes a bad age". It is a palindrome by letter. Lastly, we have "Dad palindrome Dad", another palindrome by word.
