Jack Johnson – The Horizon Has Been Defeated Lyrics 9 years ago
I actually heard this from my dad, he's a huge fan. While we were in California, we saw all the boats that drill into the bottom of the ocean, and my dad made a remark stating that Jack wrote this song referring to the drilling. "But no prints can come from fingers/if machines become our hands/and then our feet become the wheels/and then the wheels become the cars/and then the rigs begin to drill/until the drilling goes too far"

Wire – A Mutual Friend Lyrics 9 years ago
My interpretation is that the speaker in the lyrics is referring to a female acquaintance who's going through a tough time with an adolescent son. the speaker doesn't know her too well but the only time they've talked he's become concerned with her maternal plight. ''your son has set his sights upon the moon/he might replace the old with the moon'' he's objectively telling the girl that her son is soon to ignore the older people around him and embrace freedom. he advices her not ''to turn a deaf ear to the noises you hear''...i imagine the son bringing a girlfriend to the bedroom and them having sex while the mother is in the house. the speaker's telling her not to pretend nothing's happening and to acknowledge reality.

wonderful song. wonnerful lyrics, a quotidian masterstroke

Flyleaf – Tiny Heart Lyrics 9 years ago
Hey guys! So, I'm a Christian and this is the way I understand this song. I'm not saying that the way you understand this song is wrong, I just wanted to share my thoughts :)

This song is about how God loves us. The lyrics are the words that God tells us. "Tiny heart, stuck inside yourself. When will you open up to me?" He's asking us when are we going to open up to Him, he wants to make us feel how much he loves us and it is said so in the Bible that we belong to God and He gave us free will and we chose darkness from light, that's why he says "I love you so, wanna meet you again," and while we're here on earth, His grace and mercy never runs out so as long as we're alive, we still have a chance to repent and be saved. But when we die, we get what we deserve. That's the part where it goes like, "before one of us must go."

Then the chorus goes like, "Your lips touch every hand but mine," so we people, we kiss to show how much we love that person, and this is symbolical. It means, we've shown many people how much we loved them but we never gave God a chance to show us how He loves us so that we could love Him back. "In the shadows, you've slept fine, when will you get back to me? So we can rest." this means that in the darkness, in sin, we got contented in suffering but the truth is He can give us more than that, He can give us peace so we can rest.

The second verse goes like, "Tiny heart, you're not by yourself." He never leaves us nor forsakes us. "When will you recognize the beat of my own heart making your blood flow so that your chest can rise and fall." When will we realize that it's Him who makes alive? When will we realize that it's Him who did everything just so we could live?

Then the bridge goes like, "You will never know what you have done to me," we will never know how much pain we've put Him through when He got crucified and also in our everyday lives because of our sins so that we could be saved. "You will never know losing love from me," He loves us unconditionally and no words could explain how much he loves us. Even though there are times that we hurt Him, but He still loves us. "You will never know a single day alone." Even though we go on with our lives everyday without recognizing Him, He is just there guiding us and loving us till the end.

Lastly, outro goes like this, "If you choose me, I'm waiting for you. ALWAYS WAITING." This means that He's just there waiting with arms wide open until we recognize Him and surrender all to Him.

Hope that helped! He loves us so much. God bless!

@[PeterHentrichHulme:3796] Update. I agree with the MelleB90 on the part about the brother:

"It's your brother in the shaft that I'm a-swinging"
He's talking to the tree. The shaft of the axe is made of wood."

The Tallest Man on Earth – Like the Wheel Lyrics 9 years ago
Beautiful song.

The lyrics on this site are fucked though. Come on: "Like a fly above is summer all day long"... What? What fucking language is that? Wrapping my heard around this semantically raped sentence gave me a goddamn aneurysm. So I'm just gonna go ahead and try my best to interpret the actual lyrics instead of this quasi-english bullshit.

I give my interpretation with a "hat-tip" to all you clever users before me.

_______________________________________________________

"Oh I wish I was the sparrow in your kid's eye
I could fly above this summer all day long"

The "your" is most likely the narrators lover.
The narrator wishes to be closer to "your kid", expressing that this potential closeness what making him feel as if he were "Flying above this summer".
Note the positive metaphorical language.

"On an island in the heart he has to carry"

The narrator wishes he has a special place (an island) in the kid's heart.
The phrase "the heart he has to carry" shows that the narrator feels sympathy for whatever emotional turmoil this kid is going through.

"Past the many you have let into your song"

Talking to a lover, the narrator expresses that she has "let many into her heart".

Recap: The narrator is talking to a lover, focusing on how he wishes he had a special place in her kid's heart, past the many she has let into her "song" (into her life). He doesn't show much regard for his lover, but focuses instead on her kid, wishing that the kid (whom he seems to show sympathy for, i.e. "The heart he has to carry") would him dearer than all the other men the kid's mother has been with. (All those she has let into her song, if you will)

"And I said oh my Lord, why am I not strong
Like the wheel that keeps travelers traveling on"

The narrator wishes he was strong. He compares strength to the wheel that keeps "travellers travelling on". This comparison makes me believe that the narrator has a wish to leave this family behind, he washes he had the strength of the wheel so he could travel like the traveller. But he doesn't, and so he can't move on.

"Like the wheel that will take you home"

The narrator expresses a yearning for his lover to "come home". But again, she probably won't be coming home.

Recap: This is how I see it so far... The narrator is stuck in this semi-relationship with a single mother who keeps seeing all this other men. (The ones she is letting into her song) This is making the narrator deeply upset. He wishes he had a special place in the kid's heart, past all the other men. He shows sympathy for the kid and the "heart he has to carry", recognising it must be hard for the kid to not have a father, but instead have a mother who is seeing all these different men. More than anything, the narrator wishes the three of them could be a family, but his lover (the kid's mother) keeps fucking about, seeing all these other men. The narrator wishes he could let her and the kid go, that he could just leave them, that he could have the strength og the wheel that keeps the "travellers travelling on" or the strength of the wheel that brings her back to him.
But he doesn't, and so he despairs.

"And in the forest someone is whispering to a tree now
This is all I am so please don't follow me"

The switch between a third-person and second-person narrative makes me think that the person in the forest who is whispering to a tree, is actually the narrator himself, whispering his concerns to no one, to the trees of the forest if you will. The narrator seems deeply troubled and by saying: "This is all I am so please don't follow me" it makes it seem as if he is about to do something to himself. This line represents a self-loathing of sorts. "This is all I am", as if to say: "This is all I am and nothing more".

"And it's your brother in the shaft that I'm swinging"

I see this line as cryptical, but somehow I imagine the narrator walking through the forest, remembering the times he has felt like part of the family, swinging his lovers brother etc.

"Please let the kindness of forgetting set me free"

This line is pretty obvious. This poor man is walking through the forest, expressing his troubles to the trees, remembering all the good times he has had with his lover and hating how things are. Wishing he wouldn't remember all the good times, wishing the "kindness of forgetting" would set him free. (Great line by the way)

"And he said oh my lord why am I not strong
Like the wheel that keeps travelers traveling on
Like the wheel that will take you home"

See interpretation at first chorus.

"And on this Sunday someone's sitting down to wonder
Where the hell among these mountains will I be?"

Now... This is where it gets interesting. My interpretation of this is that the "someone" who is sitting down to wonder, is actually the kid. This poor little kid is sitting somewhere, wondering which one if these adults is going to take care of him. Where the hell among these "mountains" is the kid going to be. Mountains being a reference to how tall all these adults most seem to a little kid. In my mind, the narrator is walking about in the forest, sad as fuck, again expressing concerns for the kid. Where is he going to be now? Where does he belong? His mother doesn't seem to show much regard for him and he has no father. The only one who seems to really, genuinely give a shit about this kid, is in the forest talking to trees, about to do something stupid. So now that the narrators has fucked off, who among these "mountains" is gonna look after the kid?

"There's a cloud behind the cloud to which I'm yelling
I could hear you sneak around so easily"

First line is an expression of all the trouble in the narrators life at the moment. It's not just the fact that his lover is seeing other men, it's also the fact that the kid is caught in the middle of it all. A cloud behind a cloud.
Second line doesn't really need much of an interpretation, it's pretty straight forward. The narrators lover has been seeing other men, but this is absolutely no surprise to the narrator, who has known for quite a while, yet stuck around in the hope that she would "come home" so the she, the narrator and the kid could be a family.

"And I said oh my lord why am I not strong
Like the branch that keeps hangman hanging on
Like the branch that will take me home"

Now... We all know where this is heading at this point. "Hangman" is a pretty obvious clue. The narrator is talking to God, for a final time, asking: "Why am I not strong, like the branch that supports a hangman, like the branch that will take me home." The narrator wishes he was as strong as the branch he is planning to hang himself from, in despair about the whole situation.

_______________________________________________________

So... To recap this entire fucked up emotional rollercoaster...

A guy falls in love with a single mother. He loves her and he loves her kid. He wishes more than anything that they could all be together. This is all screwed up by the mother, who keeps seeing other men. So what is the narrator suppose to do? He wishes he had the strength to leave, but he doesn't. So he walks out to the forest, expressing all his concerns to the trees and clouds. He keeps remembering how happy he was, being a part of this family, and he wishes he could forget all these happy moments. He has known the whole time that his lover has been with other men. He expresses a final concern for the kid, who he really loves, before he decides to hang himself in complete despair...

VERY emotional song, brilliantly executed, amazing lyrics.

This was taken out of a place i write only to myself, this is the first time i've posted online any of this stuff, i mainly do it because i have nobody to talk these things with
SIXSMITH
Lorelei(A Poem by Sylvia Plath) reminds me of yeloow and in this i rimed and wrote somenthing on the song section
Now after reading the poem 9 words i dindt know, all adjectives, and 4 sentences that only made sense afterwords i'll see if i can find some correlation to the song lorelai
WOW WTF, I FOUND HEATHER CHANDLER: FUCK ME GENTLY WITH A CHAINSAW
Wtf have i read.
But getting to it, MOST PPL will call me crazy
THere's no direct correlation with it, but nothing in the world of poems is a sure thing, there are many interpretations and i have just the one to make you see that they speak about the same topic. Now at first i really thought it was a no no, but the ending got me relating everything that he wrote, with the country plath told us about.
He is old now, ponderous, everything that happened between they had only hebatude from the relationship, and of things stolen or borrowed of only bland things. And that's wat it's about, the dull, the lapsing of things, she was the flux of silver, and he is dying to get down that ferry one more time. And i guess the tower didn't come out of nowhere xP i mean there's no possible context where that can fit in. And it all fits in nicely with his new interpretation, and it's name with a new A is well deserved

Just wanted to point out that one of the lyrics is wrong. It doesn't say "I've sung my last song today", it says "I've sold my last soul today". Nonetheless, fantastic song. Very deep and insightful.

The Neighbourhood – West Coast Lyrics 9 years ago
Okay I have no clue whether I'm right or not because I've been listening to this song for about a year and yet nothing is clear to me. But I do have an idea?? I think that the song is just basically describing his life in California and how he grew up there throughout the years and how he's different. It also talks about stereotypes, like "they say it's happy here but it's depressing". but that doesn't explain to me where the "pretty isn't everything" phrase comes into play. I honestly don't know where I'm going with this so if anyone has an idea please let me know!

The Stone Roses – This Is The One Lyrics 9 years ago
As per I think this song is about love or an affair. The girl consumed by fire who's desires are obvious because of the plans that she had made. However I get the hint she is not only married but married to a local hardcase. I had her on a promise - not to say anything so the other half doesn't find out.
The bloke thinking this is the one being in love and the woman this is the one she's waiting for because he's the only person to go through with her plans.
The reason I get the hint she is married to a hard man is because 'she is consumed by fire' or in a dangerous place and the forth verse.
I'd like to leave the country for a month of Sunday's (get away from this bloke) burn the town where I was born - get rid of the husband.
Bellona Belladonna is a beautifully sung line. Bellona means beautiful woman and belladonna is a deadly nightshade type drug I might have them mixed up but yeah, google it

The Stone Roses – Elephant Stone Lyrics 9 years ago
Personally I think the song is about two people who are on the verge of a relationship, one more in love than the other.' Burst into heaven kiss in the cotton clouds' shows the sudden start and romance of the relationship.
"Arctic sheets and fields of wheat I can't stop coming down" I find to be a reference to coke and weed and the good time the two are having (I know it's wheat but I've never came down from shreddies)
Send me home like an elephant stone to smash my dream of love' is about one of the two, let's say him, send me to live happily ever after and well... have sex
Dreaming til the sun goes down' and 'rooms are empty you could move in right away' I find the man being more eager than the girl.
'It seems like there's a hole in my dreams' clearly something's wrong and is the beginning of the end.
'Down through the heavens chock on the cotton clouds' the illusion of being in heaven has ended hard.
' arctic sheets and fields of wheat I can't stop coming down' I get the feeling whereas the first time this is said it's like a never ending high but this time I think it's more like a never ending come down.
Didn't your bed and book shelf go and run run run away I think is a quote said by the girl, after she's taking more than she deserves( his bed and bookshelf).
Then a thought from the man 'These four walls saw your rise and fall and your midnight getbaway' I think is about the rise and fall of the relationship and the getaway is getting over her.
And Finally "seems like there's a hole in my dreams or so it seems yet there's nothing there that means anything anymore" shows there's a hole in this guy's dream of love and there's nothing in his heart or there between the two that means anything.

But even if I'm completely wrong still a mint tune!

Brand New – The No Seatbelt Song Lyrics 19 years ago
I was under the impression that the song is about an emotional guy and a logical girl.

"so it seems this doesnt suit you now
and me fresh out of rope"

It seems like he's cheated. The part about being FRESH out of rope makes me think that she found out and it doesn't suit her to be in a relationship with a cheater AND a liar. Now that she has found the truth, he doesn't have the rope to hang himself with because he already did as soon as he lied to her. He knew it was going to end up this way but wanted to keep her for as long as he could so he just lied. The reason I say he lied is because in the chorus he says:

"but how could i miscalculate
perfect eyes will have perfect aim"

It's because he was lying while calling other people liars but she had perfect aim and brought the firing squad to the right person. It was probably something really stupid that he regrets very much. He knows that he deserves what he's getting which is why he says:

"so take me and break me
make me strong like you
ill be forever grateful to
this and you"

He knows he never should have done it. He wants her to teach him a lesson and teach it hard so he remembers how stupid it was and what he's lost because of not thinking before acting. He knows that she is a better person than he is who sticks srongly to her beliefs and morals which is probably why he is so in love with her and why he keeps talking about her being so perfect in his eyes. He looks up to her. He is being logical.

After some time he turns more and more emotional. He wants her to be merciful. He starts to beg and is quick to agree to any circumstances. He even suggests some:

"fix me like a chain around your neck"

If he doesn't stray far from her again then he won't do anything to ruin the relationship. The necklace also lays on the chest near the heart ;) I think the part about the nickel is because he feels virtually worthless because of what he did to her. Then he mentions about shooting the pilot. The pilot is just a reference to whatever force might have brought them together and kept them happy and he killed that force so he metaphorically shot the pilot. Now he's the dumbass that shot the pilot and doesn't know how to fly the plane. It's just like fucking up the relationship and now he has no means of fixing it because it's up to her. So now he says:

"I'm beggin you to fly this for me
I'm here for you to use
broken and bruised
do you understand?"

He's telling her if she decides to take him back then he will do everything to help. He is there to use, for her to dictate how he is to help fix what he's done wrong. He mentions the part about being broken and bruised to emphasize that over time he's hit rock bottom and he's ready to build back up into what she wants (which is what he wants). I love when he says:

"do you understand?"

He says it in such a calm and slow manner. I get goosbumps and my nose starts to tingle like I might cry. I can picture her ignoring him as he is fighting back tears and pleading with her as calmly as he can. Since she doesn't wish to speak with him, he ends with, "do you understand." It's so simple yet so powerful. It's used so often that people just shoot off an answer. But he doesn't want an answer right away, just a confirmation that she has FULLY understood what he is offering and that she will remember and think about it. He wants her to really think about what he is saying and he will be patient while she decides. He isn't looking for an instantaneous response. Staring deeply at her, he looks for some emotion behind the cold logical poker face she wears. He looks for the real answer, not just words.

The first part of the chorus I imagine him thinking:

"it's only you, beautiful
or I don't want anyone
if I can choose
its only you"

everytime he sees her like he wants to tell her so badly but he knows she won't listen. She figures if he lied and cheated once, then he'll do it again and she doesn't want to give him the chance. For the rest of the chorus, I picture him reciting in his head as he stares at a picture he has of her on one of the many days saturated with thought of her. when he says

"but how could I miscalculate,
perfect eyes will have perfect aim"

it makes me think that he's reminiscing about how he lied to her. I see him asking himself, how could he be so stupid for thinking that she - a girl so smart, so perfect, would be fooled by a lie. Then he remembers each time he's seen her since she's stopped talking to him and once again recites what he wish he had the courage to say to her:

"f I can choose
it's only you"

Maybe it's something she said to him on his many attempts to speak to her. Maybe she got pissed off and told him to think logically and control his emotions. Told him he's in control of his emotions and he can control who he likes and dislikes and that he can get over her and choose someone else to like. It's stuck with him because it was probably the last thing she said to him. In that sense, this song IS romantic. Given the chance to pick anyone at all, he choses her. He wants her to know how deeply sorry he is for what he did and he wants to prove to her that it meant nothing.

The story has a tragic ending however. One of the last lines is:

"perfect lies from a perfect dame"

He wanted her to throw her logic out the door and go with her heart. Maybe she doesn't know how to fly the plane either but he wants her to try because she knows better than him and HE knows that if she will risk it, they will both be ok in the end. I get the impression that they did finally talk and she gave him a "maybe" type answer, but he knows she smarter than that. Maybe she DID finally understand how low he's been and tried to give him some form of false hope. He sees through it though and appreciates it. He will love her the rest of his life and a part of him is probably happy that she didn't waiver because then she would have a flaw. She wouldn't be perfect anymore.

The Used – I'm a Fake Lyrics 19 years ago
i thought it was about him quiting the drugs.

Like I fell, you can tell.
*fell like he was careless (tripped) an ended up going down before he knew what happened (falling, drugs). now he has to start at the bottom (the ground up) or the begining again

By the way I move into my head.
*moving into his head as he now uses he fully functioning, unintoxicated brain to make decisions. using the present tense "move" to signify time. slowly moving and piecing back together whats been packed away and ignored under all of those drugs

Do you think that it's me?
*"do you think that its the real me?"

Or it's not me I don't even care.
I'm alive.
*or since hes changed hes not the same person he used to be or has come to beleive he is. it doesnt matter because hes clean like he knows he should be. he is alive instead of wasting away on drugs.

I swear I'm the cleanest I have ever been.
I feel pain.
*you take drugs to make everything numb and distorted, well now that hes clean he can finally feel the sharp realities of life and the pain that he has been avoiding. maybe even the pain of withdrawal

when he says "look at me know, im a fake" its because hes changed now that hes sober and maybe he thinks being sober is just not him. Being sober is like faking who HE thinks he really is. also sounds like hes doing it for someone else. "i swear im the cleanest ive ever been" and when he says "look at me now" as if hes addressing someone to show how hard it is to go through with but hes doing it anyway.

the song is not bad but im sick of all of you whiny people posting about punks and preps. where in this song does it say anything about either of them. for all you know "he" could live in where everyone wears cowboy boots and hats and he wants to wear armani. if you dont want to be labeled as punk then dont label yourself as one. just because you dress like every other punk person out there does mean your trying to be different. who gives a fuck about clothes honestly. i saw a kid the other day wearing his belt backwards, i guess cause he thought it made him different but it just made him look like a fucking dumbass. i wanted to dropkick him in the head for spending the extra seconds/minutes every morning, night and everytime he had a shit just to get the thing on and off. if you really want to be different try acting like yourself. theres no way you can be like anyone else then.
