The Bastard Fairies – Guns And Dolls Lyrics
| 15 years ago
|
I was thinking about this song this morning, and it occurred to me that this song could be about a woman consumed by American culture's fixation on violence (guns) and sex (dolls). There are at least two ways to read the reaction of her friends and family:
1) She's just SO into these things that it's starting to scare even other, more moderate members of this culture;
or
2) She's from a different culture that does not value these things in the same manner, if at all, thus they are terrified by her serious fixation.
It's not a perfect interpretation, but it just crossed my mind this morning. |

Well, given that this was originally written and performed by Guy Forsyth, I'd say you're right on the money (except in the original it wasn't necessarily apparent if the woman saw through the guy's plan). |

Well, I don't think the whole song is about vampires. In fact, the last verse sounds like it's about the Anasazi cliff dwellings in the southwest US. |

Yes, but the Doolittle booklet also says "you're lovely, tan belly" for "Dead." My point is that it's full of typos. Like saying that Joey sings backup vocals. |

Holy crap. Why don't we just calm the hell down? It's not good to get so worked up over something so trivial. |

Yeah, they're haikus alright.
"The Stones recorded a song called "Hang Fire". I really liked how it sounded, but I couldn't reuse the same words. "Wire" was the initial point for the lyrics. I thought about barbed wires, in a farm, and I took inspiration from Japanese poetry, reusing the Haiku format: 5 syllabs, then 7, then 5 again" - Black Francis |

"Kim Deal said she took inspiration from a 1986 Bruce Beresford movie, "Crimes Of The Heart", in which Sissy Spacek is a married woman who falls in love with a 15-year old black guy."
So, yeah... Also:
"A good chord progression, very Lou-Reed influenced. I'd had the word 'gigantic' in my mind just because the chord progression seemed very big to me." - Black Francis |

I just got an idea as to the meaning of this song. What if it's about someone who's considering suicide?
"Don't leave without intentions of ever coming back." Suicide is certainly leaving without intending to come back (if you do come back, you didn't do it right).
That's all I can really think of to support it (other than the reference to a graveyard). |

This song was the reason I got into "A Prayer for Owen Meany" and John Irving's works in general. Having read the book makes the song so much better. |

It seems to me that this more of someone that he _doesn't_ like driving him crazy. I've been in similar spots when I remain friends with someone I shouldn't be friends with in the first place for longer than I should. It creates a similar feeling. |
