Isn't it strange
How we move our lives for another day
Like skipping a beat
What if a great wave should
wash us all away
Just thinking out loud
Don't mean to dwell on this dying thing
But looking at blood
It's alive right now
Deep and sweet within
Pouring through our veins
Intoxicate moving wine to tears
Drinking it deep
Then an evening spent dancing
It's you and me
This love will open our world
From the dark side we can see a glow of something bright
There's much more than we see here
Don't burn the day away

Is this not enough
This blessed sip of life
Is it not enough
Staring down at the ground
Oh then complain and pray
more from above
Greedy little pig
Stop just watch your world trickle away
Oh it's your problem now
It'll all be dead and gone in
a few short years
Just love will open our eyes
Just love will put the hope in our minds
Much more than we could ever know
Don't burn the day away

Come sister
my brother
Shake up your bones shake up your feet
I'm saying open up
And let the rain come pouring in
Wash out this tired notion
That the best is yet to come
But while you're dancing on the ground
Don't think of when you're gone
Love! love!? what more is there?
We need the light of love in here
Don't beat your head
Dry your eyes
Let the love in there
There are bad times
But that's ok
Just look for love in it
Don't burn the day away

Look
Here are we
On this starry night staring into space
And I must say
I feel as small as dust
Lying down here
What point could there be troubling
Head down wondering what will
become of me
Why concern we cannot see
But no reason to abandon it
Time is short but that's all right
Maybe I'll go in the middle of the night
Take your hands from your eyes, my love
Everything must end some time
Don't burn the day away

Come sister
My brother
Shake up your bones shake up your feet
I'm saying open up
And let the rain come flooding in
Wash out this tired notion
That the best is yet to come
But while you're dancing on the ground
Don't think of when you're gone
Love! love!? what more is there?
We need the light of love in here
Don't beat your head
Dry your eyes
Let the love in there
There are bad times
But that's ok
Just look for love in it

Wow, nobody's posted about "Pig." It's pretty much my favorite DMB song, so here's my take on it (though it's pretty straightforward for the most part). "Pig" is basically a serious kind of cheer-up song. Death is inevitable, but, regardless of what happens after we die, we can enjoy the time we have here through love. Don't waste your time. Great song.

I agree. My favorite line is "Is this not enough This blessed sip of life Is it not enough Staring down at the ground Oh then complain and pray more from above Greedy little pig" Thats pretty FREAKING sweet.

If it's true he said that, it's pretty sad- to be writing, singing, dancing along to a meaningless selection of words. The message is right there- don't waste your time, life is short, it's better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all.

its about dreaming and dancing and love and everything else dave sings about, but its saying dont waste your time thinking all about yourself and worrying about tomorrow or next week or even next year, just live your life by the moment and spend it to the best.

this is by far my favorite song pretty much because it has such a true meaning and what i get out of it is that we shouldnt think about the future because tommorrow has its own worries that we will never know about until it happens.("...head down wondering what will become of me,why concern we cannot see it") this song is saying live your life day by day and make the best of it because you only get one chance to do things right.its also saying that we should be happy with what we have and make the best of it and love is the ultimate asset to life

"dont burn the day away" the whole song is just awesome. by far one of my favorite dmb tunes. the violins in the beginning are so beautiful and the words are just great, i envy dave for being able to write such a beautiful song like this, it seems so easy for him to do to me, but still i wish i could create music as good as his. he's inspiration when he comes out with songs like this.

I think this song is saying that shit happens, and sometimes you cannot do anything to prevent it. Dont dwell on anything negative that will bring you down. Make the best of your situation, "The Best is yet to Come"

This is one of the best Dave Matthews Band songs I've ever heard. It's just like Tripping Billies, death happens, but while we're here, make it fun, and enjoy yourself. Althought, i must say, when you're down on yourself, the line "Wash out this tired notion - That the best is yet to come" means quite a lot to you..But regardless, it's a beautiful song.

This is in my top five dave songs. He tends to sing about death a lot (Lie in Our Graves, Pig, You Never Know, When the World Ends) but he always sings about dying in a reflective manner that gives some good insight or advice. "What point could there be troubling?" "Time is short but thats alright.."

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Blue
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.
