"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. I love this song, even though it's sad. I lost my grandfather when I was 9. He was a huge part of my life. When I miss him, I just remember that he's looking down and watching over me.
this song started playing wen i was at camp.... i had never heard it and yet i started crying like a baby... nobody knew wat was wrong and i never told them because i never figured it out either. then i realized why it made me so sad....death is scary and sad and when someone you love dies all you want is to believe they are still with you. but i wasnt like that wen my gramma died. i shut everything out and stayed by myself alot, mostly because i didnt want to face the truth: that gramma was gone. when i heard this song i started crying because i felt ashamed. ashamed that i shut everything out and pretend that i was okay and i didnt need help. if gramma had been watching me the whole time then what would she think i remembered all the time it had raines since her death...my b day the time i won my first horseshow, even when my mom and i made up for as huge fight. it really healed me, now thinking, even if i knew it wasnt likely, that gramma was right there with me the whole time.
This is probably one of the worst songs ever. Let me understand what the narrator is saying...the kid is sad because grandma's dead, and his mother tells him it's OK, grandma's in heaven and crying so hard it's raining out. Thanks Mom, I feel better knowing grandma is dead AND miserably sad too!
This is probably one of the worse interpretations I've read on this website. Everyone's entitled to their opinion but your understanding of the song is even worse. The point is that during ones life there will be happy and sad times and their loved ones that have passed will always be with them, guiding them, celebrating with them and ultimately watching over them every step of the way.
