I was out on a massive bender with Michael Stipe and after about his 10th pint of wifebeater he confided in me that the song was originally called "Losing My Shit" - (that's me in the corner, losing my shit" - but obviously that would have been totally incompatible with radio airplay, so they swapped "shit' for "religion".
