So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Wired for destruction
Does this make an impact
We forget the voices of the dead
But do our words even last
I'm at an impasse
This fear holds me back
The stress builds everyday
I'm wired for destruction
Am I okay
Wired for destruction
I'm only hurting myself
I'm so fucking scared
Do I have a soul
Is this life even real
Am I losing control
Envious of the content
My intentions are pure
I can't shake it
I can't fucking take it
Where do we go
Where do we go
Terror of the end
Don't send me away
All of my memories fade
Please don't call my name
Wired for destruction
Does this make an impact
We forget the voices of the dead
But do our words even last
I'm at an impasse
Uncertainty
It takes over slow
It crawls up my spine
I've never had control
I'm scared I don't have a soul
Does this make an impact
We forget the voices of the dead
But do our words even last
I'm at an impasse
This fear holds me back
The stress builds everyday
I'm wired for destruction
Am I okay
Wired for destruction
I'm only hurting myself
I'm so fucking scared
Do I have a soul
Is this life even real
Am I losing control
Envious of the content
My intentions are pure
I can't shake it
I can't fucking take it
Where do we go
Where do we go
Terror of the end
Don't send me away
All of my memories fade
Please don't call my name
Wired for destruction
Does this make an impact
We forget the voices of the dead
But do our words even last
I'm at an impasse
Uncertainty
It takes over slow
It crawls up my spine
I've never had control
I'm scared I don't have a soul

On the meaning of the song the band has said "For me, it represents the common fear of being forgotten after death," guitarist Kyle Carter tells BrooklynVegan. "It also touches on the fear of not having control and doubting every action you take. The name says it all really. Death, sickness, and most fears hold a lot of us back from living our life how we really want to, so we thought it was an important topic to talk about."\n\nThe band added, "We also wanted to give Will Ramos (of Lorna Shore) a shout out for absolutely crushing the character portrayed in the video."
