I let it fall, my heart
And as it fell, you rose to claim it
It was dark and I was over
Until you kissed my lips and you saved me
My hands, they were strong
But my knees were far too weak
To stand in your arms
Without falling to your feet

But there's a side to you
That I never knew, never knew
All the things you'd say
They were never true, never true
And the games you'd play
You would always win, always win

But I set fire to the rain
Watched it pour as I touched your face
Well, it burned while I cried
'Cause I heard it screaming out your name
Your name

When I lay with you
I could stay there
Close my eyes
Feel you here forever
You and me together, nothing is better

'Cause there's a side to you
That I never knew, never knew
All the things you'd say
They were never true, never true
And the games you'd play
You would always win, always win

But I set fire to the rain
Watched it pour as I touched your face
Well, it burned while I cried
'Cause I heard it screaming out your name
Your name
I set fire to the rain
And I threw us into the flames
When it fell, something died
'Cause I knew that that was
The last time, the last time

Sometimes I wake up by the door
That heart you caught must be waiting for you
Even now, when we're already over
I can't help myself from looking for you

I set fire to the rain
Watched it pour as I touched your face
Well, it burned while I cried
'Cause I heard it screaming out your name
Your name
I set fire to the rain
And I threw us into the flames
When it fell, something died
'Cause I knew that that was the last time
The last time

Oh, oh, no
Let it burn
Oh, oh
Let it burn
Let it burn

    Song Meaning

I let it fall, my heart And as it fell, you rose to claim it

She let go and gave into love and this guy is the one who was there. She allowed herself to fall in love with this guy.

It was dark and I was over Until you kissed my lips and you saved me

He saved her from darkness, she let herself love him. He made her happy.

My hands, they were strong, but my knees were far too weak To stand in your arms without falling to your feet

He made her melt basically, she swooned over him.

But there's a side to you that I never knew, never knew All the things you'd say, they were never true, never true And the games you'd play, you would always win, always win

He said wonderful things but they were all lies. "The games you'd play" are probably referring to stupid relationship arguments. Basically, he was a liar.

But I set fire to the rain Watched it pour as I touched your face Well, it burned while I cried 'Cause I heard it screaming out your name, your name

Rain is the metaphor for her pain and setting fire to it she means she is done with it. She wants to stop hurting. It is very hard for her because this guy isn't letting her move on. He is keeping contact with her and making her miss him even more.

When laying with you I could stay there Close my eyes, feel you here forever You and me together, nothing is better

Whenever she is with him and it's good, it's really good. She wants that feeling to stay forever. My take on the whole thing is that he broke up with her but calls her and texts her and basically uses her and she wrote this song when she was ready to say "leave me the EFF alone!"

I set fire to the rain And I threw us into the flames When we fell, something died 'Cause I knew that that was the last time, the last time

Again, she is saying that she is done hurting. She wants the relationship and the contact to "burn" It was hard though because she knew it was over and over means over... she will never go back.

Sometimes I wake up by the door That heart you caught must be waiting for you Even now when we're already over I can't help myself from looking for you

She still thinks that maybe everything will go back to the way it was before the breakup. "The heart you caught" refers back to the beginning of the song when she talks about how she let herself go and fell in love with him. That part of her still misses him and wishes for it to be that way again.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

Gentle Hour

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,
