Classic love story true to his western tx roots. One of my favorites as a story, but I think there are alot of songs that are amazing not even listed on this site. I guess I should figure out how to add them, because I have about 8 REK cd's.

This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart
"Some and now none of you"
Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
Well all this time I thought the line "I pray to god he hears you" actually read "I payed a guy to kiss you", giving this song a whole different meaning for me. I interpreted it before actually reading the lyrics so I always thought I was about a friendship where the guy was falling in love with the girl but the girl didn't want anything to change and didn't feel anything for him, so she sat him down to talk about their feelings but the guy didn't want to because he knew he couldn't fall out of love with her, so they left on a bad note and the guy committed suicide, leading the girl to feel guilty she didn't stay with him and make him talk it out.

@Anon1998 I'm coming in late here but I've always felt that way about the song. I figured it probably wasn't about that, but that's what it's always meant to me. In college I had a best friend tell me he was in love with me. He told me I could either be with him, or he would never talk to me again. We talked and I told him how I just didn't feel the same way about him. I thought he'd be upset but then get over it and we could be friends again. He just wasn't the same after that, although he did talk to me sometimes. A few months went by and he seemed to only get more depressed. I told him if he ever needed to talk, he could always call me and I'd always be there for him. He ended up killing himself a few days later. I've always blamed myself and I've always wished he had called me that night. I would have done everything I could to save his life.
