So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
You see 'em coming at you every night
Strung on pretension, they fall for you at first sight
You know their business, you think it's a bore
They make you restless, it's nothing you ain't seen before
Get around town, spend your time on the run
You never let down, say you do it for fun
You never miss a play, though you make quite a few
You give it all away when everybody wants you
You crave attention, you can never say "no"
Throw your affections anyway the wind blows
You always make it, you're on top of the scene
You sell the copy like the cover of a magazine
Putting on the eyes till there's nobody else
You never realize what you do to yourself
The things that they see make the daily reviews
You never get free when everybody wants you
Everybody knows you
Everybody snows you
Everybody needs you, leads you, bleeds you
Nights of confusion and impossible dreams
Days at the mirror, patching up around the seams
You got your glory, you paid for it all
You take your pension in loneliness and alcohol
Say goodbye to conventional ways
You can't escape the hours, you lose track of the days
The more you understand, seems the more like you do
You never get away, everybody wants you
Everybody want you
Everybody want you
Strung on pretension, they fall for you at first sight
The more you understand, seems the more like you do
You never get away, everybody wants you
Everybody want you
Everybody want you

what a riff - and I never realized what a great lyric this was...this guy was a huge star for a few years, and with good reason. Damn shame what happened to him - look at it any way you like, but homophobia (he's not even gay, but just the whiff of effeminacy in the Rock Me Tonite video made a lot of his (male?) fans head for the exits (many of whom are probably power bottoms today). He wrote some amazing songs and riffs. I've never gotten tired of this song and My Kinda Lovahhh!!!!!
