You just could not know how long we tried
To see how this building looks inside
This must be a lucky day for me
Because the sign says there's a vacancy
Look, I know you came a long way
But you made it just too late
So we had to give it to somebody else
Well, I talked to you on the phone less than fifteen minutes ago
And you told me that it was cool
I graduated from Howard U
My job is paying good money too
And if you check on my resume
You'll find they all wanted me to stay

Well, I can't take the time out
To check your credit card
'Cause the computer just broke down today
Well, I'll stop by here tomorrow to complete our interview
But I know what you're gonna say
I know what your bottom line is

You might have the cash
But you can not cash in your face
We don't want you living in here
Say you might have the cash
But you can not cash in your face
We don't want your kind living in here
Too, too, too bad
Too, too, too sad

Our first child is due here any day
That's why we're desperate for a place to stay
The location is so perfect too
So please try to do what you can do
Well, in this apartment complex no children are allowed
And if you told me that I could have saved you a lot of time
Well, I thought the bill was passed that said you could not discriminate
But I know some excuse you'll find
Because your bottom line is

You might have the cash
But you can not cash in your face
We don't want you living in here
Say you might have the cash
But you can not cash in your face
We don't want your kind living in here

Ay, you might be a great doctor
You might be a great lawyer
You might possess the key to the city
Or maybe a politician

Say you might have the cash
But you can not cash in your face
We don't want you living in here
No, no, no
You might have the cash
But you can't cash in this face

The guy won't rent him the apartment because he's black no matter how educated he is.

Great song that really shows how institutional racism works.

Warren wanted a Beach Boys thing for this one, and Carl Wilson and Billy Hinsche came in, with Carl arranging the vocal parts. The other harmony vocalists (credited as the "Gentlemen Boys") were Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Zevon's longtime backers Waddy Wachtel and Jorge Calderon, and Linda Rondstadt/Stone Poneys guitarist Kenny Edwards.

Techno Ted
Audioslave
Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
