Bernie's song is actually about his and elton's experimentation with Methanphetamine. In the 60's and 70's meth came in a capsule form called Benny's and when people did them they said they were poppin Benny's. This song is actually about drug use.
"bennie" could have been a nickname for benzedrine.<br /> <br /> that's the trademark for a racemic mixture of amphetamine. (meaning: it includes both the dextrorotatory and levorotatory versions of the molecule. those being the right- and left-handed structures, respectively.)<br /> <br /> pretty similar to methamphetamine in its effects.
Why does everyone think every song is about drugs? This song was written during the 70s when Elton and Bernie weren't in their recreational drug using days. That was the 80s. The song is about all of the popular glam rock bands during that time and how ridiculous they were.
I doubt anything in the song is actually about drugs. I was just being Mr. Know-It-All while also explaining why people might make a verbal-sound connection between "Bennie" and speed.<br /> <br /> but "that was the '80s!"...oh I can just imagine, "Hey Bernie is it midnight yet?"
