The same logic applies to Green Day my friend. They too have an agenda; and I would not be too quick to believe everything they say. Remember who the most influential media in America is...pop music. America is controlled by the media aren't they? ;) If you take what Green Day says to heart in this song; and don't challenge what they too are saying; then you still a part of the "idiot America" they speak of. |

I guess Green Day is letting you know who the real American idiots are. ;) Yet you still go out and spend your money on their CDs. :D |

The song is not disrespectful to Lane Staley in any way. They aren't accusing him of not trying to quit; but they are saying that it was ultimately his own decisions that led to his fate. If you watch the video; you can see the whole message they are trying to send of the song:
Travelling down a long and winding road; they come to the climax where "Your decision" led to your fate. Yes; it was Lane's decision, and he lied to the rest of the band about his problems...he said it was over and it wasn't.....they didn't know what to believe....but if you watch the video you can see the entire band sitting there watching it happen; and not doing anything to stop it...in fact; in the end it is Cantrell who is sitting at the table, watching it eat him...literally. They show how his decisions led him to there; and how he couldn't leave it.
The message of the song is that Lane's death was his own decision; but they didn't stop him....their decision...The overall message is pretty clear to me: They miss him like hell.
Having played in bands for some 11 years now; I've seen people go down roads like this; and have battled an addiction of my own. This song speaks loud and clear to anyone who's been down that...definitely one of my favourite AIC songs. |
