First off, this song is amazing. It's pretty self explanatory. The underlying point is how we Americans are pretty ignorant and full of ourselves. We think of our nation as the best/greatest/honest/caring/etc. on the planet. We often talk about other countries and the horrible things they have done, while the horrible things we have done are often ignored. "But it's a land of the slaves and the ku klux klan. Haymarket riot and the great depression. Joe McCarthy, Vietnam." It is basically a way of saying, step back and know our history as Americans before you go celebrating how awesome we think we are. |

I think the beginning sums up what the song is about. Basically Fat Mike has sung song after song about America and all that so he explains it with the line "I haven't got anymore excuses". Co-dependence day is just a play on Independence day (obviously). Fat Mike has wrote about America and all that is wrong with it so I think he is trying to say that we should have Codependence day because our society has gone downhill. "I haven't got anymore excuses We've gone way past alcohol abuses It's too late We gotta celebrate co dependence day" |

I feel like this song could mean he's committing suicide or he is trying to go to relieve stress or simply a challenge to swim. "And if I hadn't come down to the coast to disappear I may have died in a land-slide of the rocks, the hopes and fears." I feel like that is a way of him saying if he didn't go to swim and eventually die in the sea, he would have died otherwise by his personal life. "Let's call me a baptist, call this the drowning of the past. She's there on the shoreline throwing stones at my back." This is where I feel like it might be just him trying to go relieve stress. Drowning of the past could mean to start over and the girl throwing stones at him is trying to get him to just go out and swim already. This is why I don't think he is committing suicide because there is a girl trying to urge him on and I highly doubt someone would help someone commit suicide. Although the other option would be that the girl is simply an imagination that he is using to force himself in the water. I also feel like the CHORUS is him talking to himself and the VERSES are him narrating what is going on. Obviously Swim Until You Can't See Land is pretty self explanatory, but, again I am a little confused on the meaning. It could be suicide because he is swimming until he can't see land to commit suicide and eventually die from exhaustion and drown. The other side of me thinks swimming until he can't see land might mean he wants to go that far because then he can't see land and therefore all his stresses and fears are non existent because he is floating in the water by himself with nothing to worry about. My favorite line is easily "Are you a man or are you a bag of sand?". I think this is self explanatory as well. He is basically saying are you going to be a man and swim as much as possibly or are you a wimp and will you sink like a bag of sand. |
