Elliott Smith – Easy Way Out Lyrics 3 years ago
I really think the song is about Elliott Smith's mother and his issues from his childhood towards her. The way the whole thing reads to me is Smith is past that but has to see the choices his mother made and the way they played out. I had heard in interviews and articles about Elliott Smith that he mentioned that this song was his way of dealing with his mother.

Duncan Sheik – Lo And Behold Lyrics 8 years ago
This song has a very Biblical basis but it's Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater's interpretation of Luke 2:25 - 35. Simeon is a man described in those verses as a priest and who saw Mary and Joseph when they brought Jesus to the temple in accordance to the law. He then blessed Mary and Her child.

The Avett Brothers – Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise Lyrics 11 years ago
I feel the song is a statement of today's times. It truly is temporary but yet those in charge want to tell others how things should be -- so the line "In the fine print they tell me what's wrong and what's right/And it comes in black and it comes in white" has a dual meaning to me. It is referring to the Bible (obviously) but also those who have hijacked the Bible's message to suit their own needs and views for their political party (in newspapers, online, blogs, etc.).

The next set of verses beginning with "When nothing is owed, deserved or expected" is speaking to those confused, frustrated, or discouraged about how to make sense of today's times. You can't live your life for them -- only for yourself.

The chorus is talking about how the writer wishes everyone could see what he sees and how he wishes he could help those who don't.

An amazing song that got used on American Idol and it's amazing that the people running American Idol don't see themselves as part of the problem described.

I don't know if it's just me, but I get a Radiohead vibe from this song. I sorta picture Ben Gibbard bobbing his head and gyrating about like Thom Yorke. It sounds like something from The Bends IMO and reminds me of similar songs like "Just" and "My Iron Lung."

Sugar Ray – Every Morning Lyrics 14 years ago

When I first heard this song, I thought he said "four-point spread" instead of "four-post bed" and his girlfriend was a bookie or the singer was a bookie. Which would have given the song an interesting dynamic instead of "guy cheats on girl" thing it went for anyway. Basically, it would fit with "once again as predicted..." because that's what bookies do anyway or they try to set odds for people. And basically, he was warning his girlfriend from not talking about what he does hence "shut the door."

I like my interpretation better

If you listen to this song and Peter Gabriel's "Mercy Street," this seems like a response to "Mercy Street."

Josh Rouse – Sparrows Over Birmingham Lyrics 15 years ago

I always felt this song may have been autobiographical and is really about Josh Rouse when he was starting out in music and how visiting a church reminds him of growing up.

Maybe I'm wrong and the song isn't about him at all.

Hilary Duff – Come Clean Lyrics 15 years ago

I don't know if anyone noticed this, but this song wasn't sung by a pre-teen pop star, a lot of people would actually like it.

To me, it is about someone who is addicted to something and can't stand something about themselves ("trying to find a pigment of truth beneath my skin" for instance). It's not really a 'relationship' song as it is a co-dependent almost hurtful relationship that the singer can't seem to get out of.

Scott Walker – Jackie Lyrics 15 years ago
The song is basically about Jacques Brel according to Jacques Brel and his views of success being fleeting and not permanent....he wants to be reminded of his past ("and the time they called me 'Jackie.').

I have always wondered what would happen if someone went on American Idol and sang this song....basically, giving a middle finger to the whole 'manufactured pop music' image the show represents and this song talks about.

The Cardigans – You're The Storm Lyrics 15 years ago
This is one of the few songs I have ever seen sung by a woman that perfectly understands men -- most songs sung by women about relationships tend to be about an idealized guy and what she wants, not what guys really are and really feel. Us men can be blunt and want to be truthful in relationships. It can be violent and forceful.

The Beach Boys – Heroes and Villains Lyrics 15 years ago
For years, I thought "healthy wealthy and wise" was really "Wendy Carnie & I" and the "indian girl" mentioned in the song was referring to Brian Wilson's wife (which it still might).

Pavement – Stop Breathing Lyrics 15 years ago
I always felt this song wasn't about war nor tennis or anything related to that....to me, it was a collegiate post-hangover song about the morning after in a fraternity house or dorms ("...no one serves coffee, no one wakes up"). The narrator is remembering the previous night in a weird way which gets him thinking about writing his dad and beg for money.

Bright Eyes – Another Travelin' Song Lyrics 16 years ago
I think the line about the "prostituted child touching an old man" is a veiled put-down of teenage girls usually dating older men and trying to be something they're not. I suspect Conor was standing in a line to order and saw this and it stuck with him. I could be wrong however.

I always felt the lines "I dreamed a ship was sinking [. . .] it was a pop song and it was playing loud" is meant to separate Bright Eyes' music from what normally gets heard on the radio (or the media or whatever). Basically, he won't sing what people expect just to be on the top 40/Clear Channel/mass market radio stations.

Great song -- so great, that whoever wrote "Amazed" had to rip it off entirely from this.

Here's what I think is going on with this song:

"when they call your name
will you walk right up
with a smile on your face
will you cower in fear
in your favorite sweater
with an old love letter?"

I think the 'they' in the song are any number of guys that the girl will meet in public (at bars, classes, work, etc.). She's getting hit on or talked to ('when they call your name') incessantly and the guy's wondering if she'll smile at them while ignoring their past ('will you cower in fear [...] with an old love letter?')

The rest of the song is told in the past -- the events that transpired to lead to their break-up. The writer is so mad at her for leaving him that he is daring her to try it again ('with a smile on your face/and do it again.')

The final verse doesn't make that much sense to me, but I suspect he's talking about breakup sex ('I wish you would make up my bed') as a result of being drunk (having difficulty in deciding is prohibited after hangovers).

Elliott Smith – Everything Means Nothing to Me Lyrics 16 years ago
I also wonder if this song was Elliott's way to telegraph his own suicide/death. The "iron man trying to salute" is Elliott and the song is about him.

This is a really complex lyric and I don't think anyone will ever know what Elliott Smith intended.

The High Llamas – Nomads Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is basically about movie stars and the grunts who have to work to fed them ('this is how they fed the kids') and pamper them ('that's as close as you can get/to the secrets of the superset'). It's on a movie set, hence the references to method acting, period piece and location shoot.

The High Llamas – Sailing Bells Lyrics 17 years ago
I think the song is about a rock musician who's sitting on a hill (allusion to the Beatles' "Fool On A Hill") and complaining about how he can't catch a break. "Clash" and "Sea Spray" are referring to band names (The Clash as in the Clash, not sure who the Sea Spray are).
