In the very unlikely event that anyone ever comes back to this page, just wanted to toss in my 2 cents. This song, to me, is about suicide attempt survivors. Recovering from an attempt leaves you feeling frozen in confusion. Equal parts unfulfilled, terrified to try again, and guilty for having been so selfish. You become convinced there's something fundamentally wrong with you, but damned if you could possibly figure out what. In the end, the only thing that helps is constant contact, especially with those who've endured the same. Also, It's true that you never hear about the ones who survive, just the ones who succeeded. |

I could be off-base, but this really seems to me to be about a person (gender unimportant) who only feels confident or important or even validated when stealing someone else's love. This person HATES what they do, but it continues to be the only way they feel quantified to themselves. However, the reputation is pushing away everyone they once called friend. It may also refer to this person stealing one specific lover. "They" in the bridge referring to the former couple and the individual's insincere assurance that all is well. The regret is gripping this person every night they are with their stolen lover. |

I've listened over and over and I think the lines: "You say you love me like the laughter and the kissed back tears" "I know you love me like the laughter and the kissed back tears" are actually: "You say you love me like the laughter, loud and drenched by tears" "I know you love me like the laughter, loud and drenched by tears" |

Someone help me out here... I swear in the chorus he's saying: You hide all your prayers among youth's heart You hide all your prayers as I part Also, in the first line, I believe it's "feints" as in deception. As though the bride-to-be has been lying to herself about being happy to marry her groom. I also agree with the "fled through night's air" correction above. |

Couple of things. Someone updated the lyrics here to the producer's transcript of the song included in the liner notes. The lines should be "I packed my bags" and "I long to feel that wince in my heart" as that is how those two lines are sung live as well. "Fast" is not sung, and "winter" is incorrect. The unintelligible part is sung "It's in the Kingdom of Rust" live, but it doesn't sound like that on the album cut. Honestly, I sounded it out as "Do you see Mom?", which would make some sense as the song was written for Jimi's recently deceased father. |

This song has a lot of depth to the lyrics. "Birds flew backwards" refers to the narrator's perspective as he is moving faster than the birds in the same direction, possibly from a train window or the back seat of a cab. Seeing the birds, presumably swallows, he anticipates the end of winter and beginning of summer. The specific grammar used between the two verses implies a sense of urgency by the end of the song. Saying "won't be long" seems as though a casual observation, then later "can't be long" delivers an impatience that summer hasn't yet arrived. I imagined this, myself, to be a person who's had a really bad winter (when it rains, it pours, right?), and is looking for any sign to believe that things will improve. Hence the urgency to see summer begin. Taken more simply, it could be a child or teenager sitting in class waiting for summer holiday. |
