I think it is has something to do with feeling lost. You have stuff to do but you feel lost and out of place and nothing is for you. The whole "im a color reporter, but this whole towns bled white" could mean that. So you just get wasted instead. |

They might have felt that they have messed everything up or just assumed so. So I think they are planning to get away from all that negitivity and everything else so they dont feel horrible anymore. Division day could be the day when you seperate yourself from everyone. Because everyone sucks. |

As for the "inject my ex-wife" part, I think it is about heroine. Maybe his ex wife brought to him great feelings of joy and possibly other feelings that heroine can bring you and he doesnt want to forget those feelings but sense he lost his wife, the only way he can get those feelings back that she once brought him would be through heroine. |

I think this because through out the song there is tons of drug metaphors and Elliot Smith pondering what he has to lose. I think this song is about heroine, NEEDLE in the hay, ETC. I think it might be called Needle in the hay because he might feel lost in the world without heroine. Kind of how a needle is lost when it is in a hay stack. Also there is a slim chance of finding that needle, so maybe there is a slim chance Elliot wont feel lost in the world without heroine. |

I think at the end of the song when he says "Oh were so very precious you and I and everything you do makes me want to die, oh I just told the biggest lie" I think maybe he was being mistreated by someone. Im sure we've all had a relationship where you obviously love the person but they hurt you or do something that makes you "want to die". So maybe he does feel that way but then says he just told the biggest lie because in the end he still loves her. |
