Space-Dye Vest

Okay I know this is my third comment, but I finally found this quote from Kevin Moore again online, from the following link: dreamt.org/d-man/dtfaq.html

"It was inspired by... I was looking through a clothing catalog & saw a picture of a girl modeling this piece of clothing called a space-dye vest. And, so, I fell in love with her [laughs] for some strange reason & so the minute I did that, the minute I was just like obsessed w/this person, I was like, 'why am I doing that?' & I noticed that I was doing it a lot lately. And I think the prime reason that I was doing that, and this is what I figured out at the time, was that I had just come out of a relationship where I'd gotten dumped, basically, and so I think the situation was that I wasn't finished giving all that I was ready to give, so I was just, like, throwing it around, you know, just aiming it in different directions. It was a total case of projection. And this song is just trying to sort it out & just kind of admitting that I'm just kind of lost. So it's kind of a dark song. It was very cathartic though."

Staggarelli is quite right; this is a song from Kevin Moore, who wrote after the recent end of a relationship. If I remember that interview correctly, she ended it with him and he wasn't ready to end it, so he had all this love to throw around. He saw the picture of the girl modeling the Space Dye Vest in a catalog he borrowed from Lisa Martens (John Myung's girlfriend at the time/hence the lyric "Falling through pages of Martens on angels"). He "fell in love" with the beautiful girl, then he realized, "I don't even know her." That was the start of this song.

This is absolutely one of DTs best songs. I got my stepson into DT and this is his favorite song by far. Like Emily Dickenson said, you know when poetry is good when after reading it, it feels like the top of your head was taken off and turned around and put back on. That's how I feel whenever I hear this song.

I don't care how much better Rudess is technically over Kevin. I still prefer Kevin. IMHO he was the soul of the band, no one wrote better lyrics or music. It breaks my heart when I think that this was the end :(

I really like all the samplings here. The image I get is of a man on his bed with a glass of scotch channel-surfing, all alone.

"And I'll have no more dreams to defend"

Beautiful use of show-not-tell style. You can read into this line so much. I see a couple arguing about one's ambitions. She wants him to be different but he doesn't feel like he should have to defend who he is or who he wants to be.

"As long as she stays on the page"

This line works well enough alone, but the added meaning from the passage Vozzy posted is intense. This man is staring at a magazine picture, but doesn't trust the girl in it to remain there because he has been wrecked so many times/so harshly in the past.

Best song about a broken heart...EVER.

This can be about a breakup that leads to a general depression. I identified with parts like "nowhere to set my aim, so I'm everywhere" long before I'd experienced the devastation of breakups.

The lyrics are just brilliant. The way the song goes off on tangents, with quotes (some that are meaningful, others, not so much) portrays the spaceyness and aimlessness that he feels.

Before I knew the background of the catalog-girl, I had thought the person in the song had gotten another girlfriend and "as long as she stays on the page" meant as long as she doesn't run off, or as long as he can still relate to her...but he also hints that he's just going through the motions, not really feeling what he is supposed to feel, not really opening his heart completely...which is a theme in the song anyway.

"Love is an act of blood and I'm bleeding a pool in the shape of a heart "

Favourite line. This is Kevin Moore's work. How he was moving in a totally different direction than the band. And thus his leaving. The song is amazing. Haunting.

I think the bridge is the most meaningful for me,

"there's no one to take my blame, etc."

"and I'll smile and I'll learn to pretend and I'll never be open again and I'll have no more dreams to defend and I'll never be open again"

that part I feel that I can relate to, because of a girl I know I think that the emotion in this song is helped a lot by the guitar and piano though

Anyone who've ever been in a failed relationship, anyone at all, cannot failed to be moved by this song. It'll never be quite the same for them again, whatever joy comes from moving on to something better...there will always be that touch of mortality, that knowledge that love doesn't always last. That's what this song means to me.

It's a masterpiece...

The line that gets me about this song: "I'll never be open again, I could never be open again."

It's a super-ambient song... very bass-intensive. Awesome feel. You kind of feel like you're lost in space... and only the lyrics are binding you to anything. Pretty good song if you can get a hold of it.

I dont rember where I read it but I was looking at some DT related sites and in an interview with Kevin he said that this song was based on a girl he saw in a magazine modeling this article of clothing called a "Space-Dye Vest" and he thought to himself how odd this is im falling in love this this girl in a magazine, hence the title of the song and some of the lyrics "as long as she stays on the page"

Other then that, I am pretty sure this song has to do with a relationship of some type tied into the girl he saw in this magazine. I love Kevin Moore's work and am sad he left, however Rudess is a perfect match for the band.
