The Trash Can Sinatras – Thrupenny Tears Lyrics 23 days ago
If he's talking about Morrissey, he's wrong. "Of the honest truth There'd be no trace"? So there was no reel around the fountain and nobody gave him something that he wouldn't forget too soon? Or was he talking about his own songs?

It sounds like this song was written by a narcissist who plays games and then interprets the consequences as evidence of being so desirable.

Phil Collins – Another Day In Paradise Lyrics 3 months ago
He's saying that if you're not homeless and on skid row then you're in paradise. He's saying anyone not homeless is responsible for the government corruption that permits private expoilters to misapproprioate and accumulate wealth resulting in gross inequity. That's why this song was accepted into mainsteam airplay. Because it's false and misleading. It promotes the concept of charity instead of government reform. That's how the rulers want people to think

The Smiths – The Hand That Rocks the Cradle Lyrics 4 months ago
I think the narrator is babysitting (perhaps his nephew) and saying that he is the best protector of the baby from all sorts of potential threats, both from within and outside the house, as well as the best caretaker to prevent any longing that cannot be communicated with words. The narrator seems to think there are a lot of supernatural threats preying on the baby and they both need to pray. He mentions that he “once had a child” who went unnamed, suggesting that either he died after birth (the narrator “looked into his wonderous eyes”) or was adopted out. (Either way the child was out of the “family line” since Morrissey later sang about being “The End of the Family Line.”) Telling his son “never never never again” meant that he was never going to have unprotected sexual intercourse again that could result in another pregnancy, but he was drawn to his lover “like a moth to a flame” and couldn’t help himself. The interview quote of Morrissey saying this song came from a non-romantic relationship was him indirectly saying that the relationship was sexual (but not romantic.) You can incorporate what you know from other songs to conclude so (“Pretty Girls Make Graves,” “Miserable Lie,” “Reel Around the Fountain,” “What Difference does it Make,” “These Things Take Time,” etc.) Then he went in the other direction and claimed to be celibate. Later, in “November Spawned a Monster” he sang about “a symbol of where mad, mad lovers must pause and draw the line” because people cause a lot of pain and problems with their breeding. Maybe he felt guilty about his own brush with fatherhood. (But later in his Autobiography, he said that he and his girlfriend considered making a “miniature mewling monster.”) In “Pregnant for the Last Time” he may have been referring to his sister (the mother of the baby he may have been singing to in this song) or maybe his former non-romantic lover, or his friend, Linder. Who knows, but he’s saying it’s better for people to quit making babies. But later, he defended the “Teenage Dad on His Estate” with his baby and his methadone. Later he sang about being too young to be a father in “Istanbul.”

The rest of the lyrics aren’t even in the lyric book and take a detour because a three year old is too big to be rocked in a cradle. Sometimes they like to sit on people’s laps, which isn’t necessarily inappropriate, but I agree that “climb upon my knee, sonny boy” sounds creepy. And “you’re mine” sounds creepily possessive.

Bruno Mars – Locked Out of Heaven Lyrics 6 months ago
I don't think this song is clearly written. He's telling his lover that her sex takes him to paradise, but also that she is making him feel like he's been locked out of heaven, as in she stopped putting out. But as someone said, that's not the intended meaning. "Open up your gates" is a double entendre. It's actually an annoying song and I don't know why radio stations have felt the need to shove it down unsuspecting listeners' ears.

Morrissey – To Me You Are A Work Of Art Lyrics 7 months ago
He's admiring someone from a distance ("somewhere there's a someone" who can soothe him.) He doesn't want to reach out and connect because he has no heart. He is simply satisfied in knowing that not every human on the planet is an ugly monster (which is what perpetuators of the Evil Industry are.)

The Smiths – Half a Person Lyrics 1 year ago
I think this song is Moz asking the New York Dolls if they have 5 seconds to spare to hear about how he was so obsessed with them in his youth that he followed them to London even though he couldn’t afford it and he even abandoned his girlfriend to pursue this obsession. And even though he would start his own band that would eclipse them and make him wealthy, he feels that the crux of his life story was his youthful obsession with them. Even the girl he left behind wasn’t impressed with his achievements.

The Smiths – Rubber Ring Lyrics 1 year ago
Moz believes that the song is an entity that can stand by you and save your life. "Rubber Ring" is a double entendre because he also believes that music is on the same level as sexual pleasure. Personally I think that's comparing apples to oranges.

Morrissey – Dial-a-cliché Lyrics 1 year ago
I also think this song is about his father, who wanted a more traditional type of son, not the little singer dancing on the table. It's funny when breeders don't get the offspring they were expecting. They forced people into existence without consent and don't deserve to get what they want.

Morrissey – Suedehead Lyrics 1 year ago
It's either about a one night stand who isn't disappearing as expected (shallow) or the one night stand/"good lay" scenario is a metaphor for rejecting a stalker fan. Moz played a one night concert in a city, the stalkers followed his car to his hotel, and a particular stalker broke and entered into his hotel room to read his lyric book for new songs. Moz is "so sorry" about not giving the fan the desired attention because he knows he led the fan on. The video reveals that Moz himself was like the stalker fan too following James Dean around, who was then deceased by the time the video was made.

Morrissey – Now My Heart Is Full Lyrics 2 years ago
I think this song is about the pros and cons of being different/non-conformist. Not everyone will understand his non-conventional pursuits. Maybe everyone he loves in the house will freak out because he’s not going to seek out a wife. Instead he’s more interested in fictional characters and non-winner type people. And there are struggles (he gets tired again and tries again.) And yet his heart is full because he’s the one and only “jammy Stressford poet,” beloved and admired. He himself is a winner. Then there are those who will not care either way and will “pass by.”

Morrissey – The Loop Lyrics 2 years ago
I think Moz is poking fun at fans who gave up on meeting him. He says he\'s still right where he\'s always been, but that\'s all over the map. He also says they can call even though they don\'t have his phone number and they won\'t get through anyway because it would just go to voicemail. These people are not in "the loop" (not in his circle.)

Morrissey – Speedway Lyrics 2 years ago
The song starts off with a chainsaw sound, but what is that applicable to? Maybe it’s supposed to be an engine a la “Speedway.” But what is the “speedway” a metaphor for? The song is about rumors that aren’t lies and shielding someone from implication. So, Manko and Martyjar are probably correct that it’s just a reference to Marr. I always figured the song had something to do with the Smiths because Moz would say that he was the only one held to contractual obligations after they disbanded, which makes sense because he was the draw and the others were replaceable. So when the drummer sued Moz and Marr, the so-called music press vilified Moz, not Marr, even though, as LadyStardust7 pointed out, Marr defended the suit in the same manner as Moz. Moz could have pointed out that Marr was no innocent bystander, but did not. So, the pressed accused Moz of saying the other members were “replaceable lawnmower parts” even though a lawyer said it and attributed it to him. But Moz said the statement was itself true. So the “written lies, twisted lies” (accusing Moz of saying something he didn’t say) actually “weren’t lies” (the statement itself was true.) I wouldn’t actually be surprised if Moz specifically requested an aggressive drum ending as a kind of show up to Joyce because after all, he was replaceable.

Morrissey – I Just Want to See the Boy Happy Lyrics 2 years ago
I just thought it was simple well wishes for his nephew in a rough/cold world. The "bad thing" part is funny. I actually never cared much for people concluding that something is a "good thing" or "bad thing" (like in a Smiths song, "girl you did a good thing, girl you did a bad thing.")

Morrissey – Alma Matters Lyrics 3 years ago
For a long time I didn't know what Alma mattering had to do with Morrissey ruining his life his own way. But now I realize that Alma is himself. He's the one who matters to someone, somewhere. The video is ridiculously anti-vegan for someone purportedly opposed to the Animal Holocaust. He's saying that he can steal as much lactation from calves as he wants and eat as many fried donuts made with the products of ovary cycles from the chick grinding industry as he wants and as hypocritical as he made himself out to be, he still matters to someone, somewhere. And it's not just a mental connection; it's physical. Look at the original lyric sheet: "In part and in hole."

The Smiths – I Started Something I Couldn't Finish Lyrics 3 years ago
I guess what Morrissey started that he couldn't finish was The Smiths. After all they disbanded shortly after recording this song. The "guilded beams" are golden arms that play guitar. The guitarist got burnt out, but Morrissey doused the venture with gestures intended to fuel. Morrissey can be a ball buster; that's why he changed "guilded beams" to "Heinz baked beans" in a live rendition.

And when I posted my interpretation I didn't realize "in the weeds" was an expression. So maybe it's telling her to take a break from the complexities or take it easy. Who knows.

(idiomatic, restaurant slang, of a cook or server) Overwhelmed with diners' orders.

Morrissey said in an interview that the song was autobiographical and that makes perfect sense. It's about his obsession with touring and live music to fill a void and chase a high. But his fans were like, "Nuh-uh, it's about Brexit." Great song and video. "Everyone who comes must go."

Fiona Apple – Please Please Please Lyrics 4 years ago
This song is about the idea of a "Smiths reunion" and the title refers to a Smiths song ("Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want.") Morrissey regularly releases innovative artistic albums with unique melodies, but the losers on the "sad same team" don't want "more melodies," they want "something familiar, something similar" to what they know already (the ones that have been "made up already.") They're "steady going nowhere" because they can't appreciate the artistic value of the fresh material (another reference to a Smiths' song, "Nowhere Fast.") "No more maladies" is a reference to a Morrissey video compilation, "The Malady Lingers On."

Natalie Merchant – Wonder Lyrics 5 years ago
I see this song as the opposite of Morrissey's "November Spawned a Monster." While Merchant describes a disabled child as "one of the wonders of God's own creation," Morrissey describes it as "as symbol of where mad, mad lovers must pause and draw the line." I totally agree with Morrissey's interpretation. Ironically, some fans think that Morrissey directed one of his songs towards Merchant: https://songmeanings.com/songs/view/55789/

Morrissey – Julie in the Weeds Lyrics 6 years ago
I interpret this song as suggesting that Julie "see something new" simply for variety and balance, but not because it would be better. Because if you lie in the weeds the seed pods will stick to your clothes and hair and in some areas they are so sharp they will prick you and make you bleed. But you may see some blue skies instead of looking at the stage everyday.
He is also saying he appreciates her and is protective of her from the hostile fans who don't get her obsessiveness (he does get it.)

Elvis Costello – Distorted Angel Lyrics 6 years ago
Interesting song. When you look at the lyric sheet there's a photo of a Barbie doll, which suggests that's what the "distorted angel" is. But if you listen to it with no photo it sounds like it's about child molestation; a lot scarier than maybe what it's intended to be about.

Elvis Costello – All This Useless Beauty Lyrics 6 years ago

Morrissey – All the Young People Must Fall in Love Lyrics 6 years ago
I interpret this song not literally (although maybe it is supposed to be), but as mocking the government. What if public school students decided they had more important priorities than acknowledging who the president is, pledging the allegiance to the flag, and just being brainwashed in general? How much more cool would school be? More high, less low. Love this song. So cool.
