I think this is a cover version but I don't know who did the original version. Matt Bellamy decided to record this song because he wanted a song on Origin of Symmetry to be about giving someone love without wanting anything in return.

The original version of this song comes out of the musical "The Roar of the Greasepaint — The Smell of the Crowd.” People mistake Nina's Simone cover of this song to be a original but her version is actually a cover as well.
