Maybe the singer is referring to a relationship in which the person they're with is with them because they are infatuated (" in love" ) with a past (or maybe never even existed and simply in their head version of the narrator?). Many of us experience simple crushes or even limerence for people we truly don't know much about. "Our love is in danger" referring to the crumbling facade of the narrator as their partner's idealized version of the narrator is begining to fade as they get to know the narrator more maybe? "The one you really love" is the idealized/past version of the narrator that the partner is in love with.
