Um, Yes I agree with the lynching interpretation. There's lots of pointers to it throughout the lyrics.

I've always thought this song was incredibly sweet powerful and moving. But as I mentioned above I just listened to "Mississippi God damn" by Nina Simone and it made me think of this song.

Like did Mason Jennings actually write it?

One line I've never been able to make sense out of though is "you'll be at the bottom when the boat breaks through"

It brings to mind an image of a slavership.... But it's just seems a little muddled and strange. Like the boat crashes and the people escape and that lets the freedom in?
