It’s about the strokes, you fucking idiots!
Impossible for them to be singing about their disdain against the white stripes, the darkness, etc. number 1, the white stripes opened for sleater-kinney as well as the yeah yeah yeahs and the black keys. Number 2, sleater-kinney, namely Carrie, has stated in her short lived NPR blog that the darkness was one of the last great bands to ever live before those gatecrashers of 2001 got on their hands and knees and licked the floor off the NME offices.
You would know this if you were a REAL s-k fan!!
The killers were only just getting started at this time, well, a year earlier. If you listen to One Beat a lot of the songs are hinting at the strokes as if to rip off a bunch of rip offs themselves. Clever if you ask me.
There was virtually no other bigger band at that time to write a hate song about than the strokes. But sleater-kinney is such a good band they didn’t feel the need to start some war between both bands. I quite like the strokes myself, but in terms of sleater-kinney I don’t think they can come anywhere close.
I would have liked to have seen what these boys said about sleater kinney in the press. I wish sleater Kinney could have performed this song in 2005 in front of five bleary eyed New York boys on Jools Holland. I would have lived to see that.
