My personale take on this song is that it's actually about a woman who killed herself. The storytelling about the woman's life is actually quite interesting and I love the line it follows. Basically, the male singer and the woman were highschool sweethearts. Eventually, they had to part ways and leave each other. Obviously the woman had a lot of problems and one thing led to another and she ended up committing suicide ("Deny yourself the benefits of being alive"), which really broke the man's heart. The song takes place when the singer comes back to their hometown and is visiting the woman's grave. And then the woman appears as kind of a ghost and sings with him, which would be the part sang by the female singer. The boy and the girl the female singer is tallking about are actually both singers!!
