Gerard McMann/G. Tom Mac wanted the song to resonate with the Lost Boys movie but not be specifically about vampires. He had a copy of the script but had not seen any portion of the film. Per other sites (Wikipedia & song facts to name two) he wrote the song “about a rejected youth’s longing for family, something he felt nearly everyone can relate to on some level”.
Interesting to read the interpretations that assumed vampirism was the subject, but I think it’s much more poignant when you take vampires out of it!
