I think this song is about misguided faith and loss. I feel the main character is going through tough times (probably a veteran), and is facing financial problems. However, rather than face the problems and solve them, he turns to God, waiting for His help alone, thus leading to his, and his family's, situation becoming a lot worse. That's what I gathered, but regardless, it's a great song.
