Lyric discussion by dirty11827

What the heck is a "sounding sea?" All the lyrics sites state that. Isn't it "sound and sea?" A sound is a small body of water that can connect a sea to another body of water.

@dirty11827 You are correct a “sound” can be a narrow stretch of water. Reading the line as worded it seems to elude to a river meeting a sound or sea.

Sounding can also be the act of “measuring”.

"Someday lady you'll accomp'ny me Out where the rivers meet the sounding sea"

To accompany is to go along with someone on equal terms.

When you put the two lines together, it could be interpreted that the “sounding sea” is referring to the action of measuring the depth of his love.

@dirty11827 I still think I am correct, but I accept your viewpoint. :) The first dictionary I consulted didn't even mention water. :) Nor the second. :) Ah, found one. Bob's a Detroit area boy. The Detroit River, which is actually a strait, could be considered a sound, don't you think? Plus, the Puget Sound, in Washington, isn't exactly narrow. Thanks for responding!!!!

By the way, somehow Kanashi's account and my account got intertwined. I am the original poster.
