A very beautiful song about love, art, and life itself. I'm not sure if there is one specific meaning of this song. But clearly it is about relations between lovers, and clearly it uses religious imagery: Babylon, Bethlehem, Bibles, Cain, Jesus - which is always an essential part of Cohen's work.

It is definitely also a song about the process of making art (songs) - the jew harp and the drum are proof of that. The skylight resembles the drumskin - a grey sky full of rain, which I think is where the songwriter initially finds his inspiration.

During one hour he travels in his mind through various love affairs - with religious undertones - and ends up realising how as a songwriter he can create his own universe by giving words to a song.
