Australia took in a fair number of Eastern European refugees after WWII including many young men who had been conscripted into the Nazi military. Their was a large refugee Crisis after WWII Displaced persons fleeing the soviets. Australia wanted strong young men to help tame the frontier.
On a personal note I remember this music video being in moderate rotation on MTV not realizing its relevance to my own existence a year later I was visiting family (uncle 2 aunts) half siblings and sister and law of my father and before I had even spent a night down under I was told my Uncle's labor contract had a choice lumber jacking or wrking the Blue Sky Mine. It was the start of an intensive history lesson over three weeks.
