I think this song is about falling out of love of a girl to ed.As ed compares the girl's cold treatment to a cold coffee in the morning while he is still high of being in love with her as if he is "drunk of last night's whisky and coke". in this line I can also say that their both in love before, but now only ed is still high with that feeling while the girl's love is slowly fading. Nevertheless, he still wants the girl to stay with him. the lines " tell me if I'm wrong, tell me if I'm right, tell me if you need a loving hand to help you fall sleep tonight," is showing how desperate ed to please the girl. it's like he's willing to do everything just to bring back the love of the girl for him. the lines "tell me if I know, tell me if I do tell me how to fall in love the way you want me to". this line means that he wants to know what's wrong him so he could do something about it. " you can stay with me forever or you could stay with me for now" this shows that their relationship will depend if to the girl's decision to stay but he is still happy that he still have her for now.
