I recall reading somewhere that this song was written specifically with all of the Dupree sister's relationships at the time in mind. One was getting divorced, one had an engagement called off, and I believe the other had just been dumped.

That being said, this song seems to be a reflection on all the sad things that seemed to happen all at once. At night, when people have time to think about what's going on their lives, that's when the singer is reminded of the moon and how it's shining down on her life without the other person around to hurt her. At some point, she must have gotten a (possibly drunken) phone call from her ex trying to get back together, and instead of taking him up on the opportunity, she's inspired by how strong her sisters have been and turns him away.

It sounds like a really sad, upsetting song, but it's more like a song of sisterly love and sticking together through the hard times.
