I actually think it's saying just the opposite. She's saying she likes being single, she doesn't feel the need for a man in her life, but that's an anomaly in this world. You're viewed as awkward and abnormal if you're a women and your world doesn't revolve around a man. She's been "warned to be contrary" by her teachers and religious leaders, even though her lifestyle is not hurting anyone. That's why I like the line "Preacher said a prayer for me, God help the girl, she needs all the help she can get..." Because it's ironic when you consider that she just previously stated that she's doing just fine by herself. It's everyone else that has a problem.
