It is also a song I share with a dear friend... we love each other deeply... we are soul mates... but we cannot be together... it's very hard, when you know someone loves you as much as you love them, but life/timing/fate/commitment made that this person is with someone else, and as much as they want to be with you, they just cannot... they cannot change their life....
Walk away however can be also seen as they finally decided to walk away from what they had... to be with their friend... maybe more wishful thinking here...
