I see it as the character being refused by someone he tried to love. Not just rejected, though. It didn't have any effect on her and he essentially means nothing to her.

Just a sign that it's hard for her too, would help you a little bit in your own sadness. You're not the only one hurting after the breakup and that you're not completely forgotten.
