I couldn't help but chuckle to myself when someone claimed it's about having a dog. Each to their own, I suppose!

It's about insecure teenagers being in love.

It's about being scared to say "I love you" as your parents have told you that every day and you want what you say to mean something.

It's about being frustrated because of the insecurity (and inexperience) of of articulating your feelings. The the fear of being misinterpreted, and perhaps, spoiling what is, is too much to risk.

It's about enjoying the moment with that special person, and enjoying their presence without the need to talk. You're free to imagine happy places with them, and so long as they are next to you, it could even come true.

It's about growing up and finding things out for yourself - ie making mistakes, before you're too old.

It actually is about Gary Lightbody's dog (the lead singer). He wrote it for him after his dog passed suddenly.

@originuk I like this theory specifically, but I think it's about one person being insecure while the other is outgoing in a relationship. I noticed something about the music video; Gary is laying in very...dangerous places. Alone. While singing the chorus. Indicating he's talking to someone, trying to convince them to trust him. But the person is insecure, so they don't like it. However, at the end of the video, he's laying on a bed. Now, I'm not saying he's trying to convince the person to have sex with him; no. I'm simply stating the fact that the insecure one is...
