Lyric discussion by planetmars

Ben Howard had an ex girlfriend who had committed suicide by hanging herself just as it explains in this song. That's what most of his songs are about.

As for Follaton Wood, they were obviously young and in love. The girl had insecurities and problems, she was always curious about death. "Maybe we're just lost souls here, maybe everybody goes" The rest of the song was pretty literal. "You woulda laughed your heart out" means if the girl saw what she did to herself she would've laughed at herself.

It is really sad to know about Ben's songs. If you think about it, you will know what Ben was going through in dealing with her death if you really listen to the lyrics of Ben's songs. I

Here are the songs that clearly states that situation

Gracious: Darling I'll grow weary happy still with just the memory of your face. Gracious goes the ghost of you I will never forget the plans and the silhouettes you drew.

Only Love: Darling you're with me forever and always.

Esmeralda: Blinded Now I see that death moves amongst us Lonely, oh no not me I have a grave to dig fast moving feet

The Fear: I been worryin' that I'm losing the one's I hold dear

There are also old songs like Wouldn't be a lie and three tree town, just cant find the lyrics.

Shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet. And as far as Esmeralda goes.. he has said it is about a orange tree he had named Esmeralda. He says it in a video on youtube.
