The song is about a man who is "bad", as he is selfish (let me wear your coat), and is only capable of feeling anger. When he says "my love is vengeance, that's never free", I think it refers not to love specifically, but the only passion, desire he is capable of feeling is hate, revenge.

But the thing is, this man doesn't want to be this way. "My dreams aren't as empty as my conscience seems to be". He aspires to be a better person, but simply isn't strong enough. Because of this, he became even more bitter, thus the blue (sad) eyes.

@MagicMann ..I am thinking, that, as you say, this person IS inspired to improve all the time, and that line means, to me, that they are aware of the paradox.. who they are, and who they are becoming… are bridging the gap daily, between what is and what ought be, drawing ever nearer….and their version of love is to NOT seek vengeance, instead imposing their self-control over their own mighty will and again, rising above it all.

@MagicMann I have someone in my life at the moment like this. I have not left him because I understand what he is going through. But it has gotten to the point that if I stay my spirit will die. If I leave him his spirit will die. He knows how much I love him but he can't let me in. He has tried. I waited as long as I could until now I have to purposefully make myself positive after his verbal attacks. I hope the best for him but if I have to choose between him and...
