Lyric discussion by lover dont leave me

In my opinion, the author is emotionally fucked up, possibly because of a previous relationship gone sour.

In the first 2 paragraphs, he got away from the summer fling and (tried to) cleanse(d) his thoughts of her. She's confused as to why he left and insists he made a mistake and will regret it; he agrees that she's probably right. He just doesn't think he's ready and doesn't want her to see how messed up he still is.

In the third paragraph he recalls how he remembers their time was spent together: in bed. She proclaims that she wants more than just a summer fling. The author knows this isn't possible for him so he knows this is where he must draw the line and get away.

In the fourth paragraph the author explains how he doesn't want to wait in a relationship that could be doomed to fail anyways especially if he's not ready to open up. He would rather be single and figure out what's going on by himself and not drag her down with him.

It seems apparent that he knows that he likes her too, and sometimes wishes he could go back to the day he turned his back on her and choose a different path. She's probably moved on by now.
