Though i think there is some merit to the thoughts that the song has something to do with America being fucked, i believe it goes deeper than just society. It seems to me as if Ian was writing about his experience as a human, not merely an American. He expresses in the song his disconnection with other humans. That it is hard to connect with them and express to them the err in their ways.ultimately, i feel he empathizes with everyone else. Seeing perhaps how he too is guilty of the same things but in different degrees.
