It totally gutted me that he ended the album like that. Basically what the whole Father John Misty thing is about: self-loathing, self-deprecation, self-frustration, and realizing how selfish it is to have all that emotion directed at no one but yourself.

Whoa, I think you're off here. I don't get that feeling at all. I think he just really never liked his name and was looking for an opportunity to reinvent himself and be his own man (so to speak). Especially after leaving the Fleet Foxes. He wanted to create a mythical version of himself. And Father John Misty definitely fits the bill.
