Between the Lines

I started listening to this song right after it was released, and for the longest time, I couldn't understand why I would listen to it over and over again. It just seemed to resonate deeply with me but yet I had never been cheated on in any relationship. And then I realized that it wasn't necessarily about being cheated on, at least not for me. But rather, that you can try being with someone, dating someone, and then you realize that they're talking about another person, and you have a realization that they are in love with that person but he hasn't figured it out yet. So the song evokes this soft, plaintive feeling to the loss of the "potential" of a relationship. That you had hoped for more but instead you realize that you should let go, that you'll never step out of the shadows into a real relationship with that person.
