I know this song is about a romantic relationship, but to me it's always held a very special meaning. I came from a fairly complicated family with an abusive father and remember my stepmother always defending him and justifying his antics. They had another much younger child besides myself, and I think at one point, the fact that she was hurting her child and herself by justifying his actions troubled me much more than the fact that I was also being hurt (directly) by her egging my him on. I was always their scapegoat, and I started to realize how awfully twisted my situation was around the time Keane released Hopes and Fears, especially with me having to lie to my friends about it all and having to keep my problems to myself. This song really helped me through it though. It gave me hope that there would be a last time; that I wouldn't have to put up with this forever and that my stepmother and stepbrother could fend for themselves and I didn't have to worry about them because it simply wasn't healthy. They were making a choice to stay, but I didn't have to and certainly was not going to.

Anyhow, this probably sounds incredibly contrived... I've always wanted to put it out there, though.

Thanks for sharing. I wouldn't necessarily say that this song is a romantic one. I think Tim left it interpretive on purpose so that many of us can relate to the lyrics, because we all have different experiences. That's my favorite part about Keane. This song generally makes me think of the beauty of forgiveness and how hard it can be to forgive at times.
