I think this song can be interpreted many ways and I know when I first heard it I thought of this person that was once my "best friend". It could be mental or physical abuse... for many years I put up with a fair-weather-friend and I can imagine them realizing I am letting them go. It can be about any kind of break up such as a friendship or relationship. Also I had a thought that "you're knocking on my window" - could mean that because the person is letting them go the thoughts of them are now haunting them at night.
