I literally cry every time I listen to it, but it is a very touching song.

From Wikipedia:

"If I Die Young" is a mid-tempo accompanied by acoustic guitar, banjo, accordion, mandolin, and fiddle. The song's female narrator describes being content with the life she has lived, assuring others that if she were to die at her young age, that she would have no regrets. She recognizes that once someone passes away, others seem to pay attention to life more: "And maybe then you’ll hear the words I been singin' / Funny when you're dead how people start listenin'." So, she states that "if she dies young," then her family left behind should "save their tears" for a time when they're really gonna need them." She is not scared of death, because she knows she had a good life.

Try living live to it's fullest, as anyone could die at any moment, including you.

I would like to say this song IS about suicide, For a moment imagine that little girl on the playground, that always was getting made fun of, everyday over and over again...called names every single day from elementary school threw Jr. High !!!! Now as that little girl, she is imagining herself in her "fairy tail world" this part of the song... If I die young, bury me in satin Lay me down on a, bed of roses Sink me in the river, at dawn Send me away with the words of a love song .....IS her "fairy tail world" This part of the song ..... Lord make me a rainbow, I'll shine down on my mother She'll know I'm safe with you when she stands under my colors, oh and Life ain't always what you think it ought to be, no Ain't even grey, but she buries her baby... She still cares for her family, but to the little girl this life is not the fairy tail world and is to hard to face day in and day out....

The sharp knife of a short life, well I've had, just enough time.... this part means well she's had, just enough time of this life and does not want any more to do with it.

And I'll be wearing white, when I come into your kingdom I'm as green as the ring on my little, cold finger, I've Never known the lovin' of a man But it sure felt nice when he was holding my hand, there's a Boy here in town says he'll,love my forever Who would have thought forever could be severed by The sharp knife of a short life, well I've had, just enough time

"Green" meaning young and innocent "But it sure felt nice when he was holding my hand, there's a Boy here in town says he'll, love my forever" This part is a child's "first crush"

A penny for my thoughts, oh no, I'll sell them for a dollar They're worth so much more after I'm a goner And maybe then you'll hear the words I been singin' Funny when your dead how people start listenin'

People didn't see her hurting inside she may have told her parents and teacher's but they just told her to ignore them saying this is just a phase it will get better, but to her she heard "it's never going to change" "so put on your best boys and I'll wear my pearls" "what i never did is done" this could be her way of saying i told you and you didn't listen, so you will have to live with this. and for saving your tears, could mean she wasn't worth crying about before so why do it now.

This is just what I got from the song and if this is what the song is truly about is sends a very powerful message about children having to deal with day to day life. Source(s): I have been doing a lot of research on Alternative Aggression in children....so I guess this is why I perceived this song as being about adolescent suicide.

[Sorry for this being SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO long!] {I always have lots of opinions}

I've never really thought about this song meaning that. I've heard it so many times and felt so sad whenever I heard it, but I never thought it could mean something so different from what I thought. I thought that it honestly meant that a girl was done with her life, she'd had enough, but there were things she wanted others to know, like when it says, "Gather up your tears and keep them in your pocket/Save them for a day when you're really gonna need them" she doesn't want her family to cry over her death. But the way...
