My take is it's about his surprise at suddenly becoming engaged and wondering if it was just the romance of summer that led to this big step, before they are really ready. Doves are the sign of love and romance and they were doing the walk. Their path was sure and steady and then suddenly they jumped ahead in a flight of fancy. It's a beautiful song.

I'd like to think that this was the woman in the song reinforcing that point that the love dance is over and time to get serious. Any idea is this could be right or am I over-analyzing?
