Actually, I think that this song is applicable not only from political standpoint. I think it's about mechanisms of manipulation through media in general.
We all know how little is necessary to make a big deal out of anything - you just need to push the right buttons of the viewer and the right buttons are "the fear addicted", "the pain you tasted" and the way to push the buttons is "danger illustrated", "the bitch you hated" etc.
Together, it results in "the self inflicted, mind detonator" that is just a set of mind of a person strongly influenced by all this triggers...
I presume that no one is spared - everyone got some influence, it's just a question of how much.
