I feel like this song is about a relationship (cliche, but bare with me!). It seems like the singer is talking to their significant other, who just broke off the relationship because they had personal issues from the past (or monsters on their back) that they need to deal with before they can be a part of something bigger then themselves. To me the singer is saying: go ahead do your own thing for a bit, I'll help you sort out what you need to sort out but when this is said and done I want to be with you. However, the singer takes a somewhat irritated tone when he says "How long, I say how long, will you re-live the things that are gone?
